America's Cup final, Oracle Team USA stage amazing comeback and retain the America's Cup

Oracle Team USA today retained the America's Cup with a thrilling come from behind victory in the final do or die deciding race in San Francisco.

In the end their upwind foiling technique was once again what made the difference, enabling them to power past the Kiwis upwind and turn a three second deficit at the leeward gate into a 26 second lead at the end of the beat and a 44 second winning margin at the finish.

ETNZ had grabbed the early advantage off the start to hold the controlling inside berth at the first turing mark and lead for the entire downwind leg. Oracle survived a huge nosedive just before the turn but remarkably were quickly up and running again.

By the start of the second half of the run they .were hot on the Kiwis heels again - less than a boat length directly behind at times - and when the teams split at the leeward gate there was just three seconds between them.

Thomas Coville and the Sodebo team validating modifications made to the maxi trimaran prior to going on standby for another attempt at the solo round the world multihull record

From the following article (in French) on http://www.sodebo.fr

http://www.sodebo.fr/voile/actualites/article/place-navigation

and the rough bing translate below:

Five weeks before the start of the stand-by for the record of the round the world single-handed (18 October-Brest), the schedule is very busy for Team Sodebo. Adjust, calibrate, validate and ensure, the smallest detail that will improve the performance of the maxi-trimaran and facilitate life on board for his skipper. Wednesday, Thomas Coville and his crew volunteered an express return to the estuary of the Gironde. Training of 24 h, in varying conditions 10 to 23 knots, summed up in two words by Thomas Coville: pleasure and satisfaction!

Still as fabulous!
After his injury this winter on the road to the discovery and a season to navigate on Sodebo M34, Thomas was eager to regain the helm of his trimaran. Back in La Trinité-sur-Mer, the smile is there and the look still amazed on this beautiful bird of 31 meters. " I'm made for this, the multihull, speed, sliding... It is a pleasure boat, I have a lot of luck! « » Launches the Sodebo skipper, always surprised, never weary of the sensations that provide such a boat. " Downwind is magical because it does nothing, it is very demanding. There is a mixture of adrenaline and anxiety when it is sailing at more than 30 knots. It is a positive voltage. I had to utter the same words to describe the M34 this summer because I love sailing, being at sea and in the race, but there is definitely not the same thing! "Smiles Thomas.

Within centimetres...
After several outings in the day, Team Sodebo entered the heart of the matter with this first training of 24 hours at sea. Left Tuesday evening, Thomas and his team have headed south with a downwind descent to Bordeaux and a rise at the close, the opportunity to test the trimaran in the configuration "World Tour" after his summer construction in varied weather and rough seas. « I am very pleased, we have really gained in speed and performance by optimizing the management of the boat. We have worked on auto-pilot control on night navigation and its specificities in terms of instruments and the sails. We especially tested our two gennakers turns to compare under similar conditions. With Martin Gaveriaux, responsible for performance within the Team, the idea is everything noted on their use depending on the environment, the corner of navigation, so that we have similar references during the World Tour. We will pick the small detail that could make the difference. »

Teamwork to record solo.
If it is not alone on board, his teammates are there as observers. The skipper of the maxi-trimaran Sodebo realizes it even maneuvers and bar 90% of his time. I am the only one to feel the boat in this way, to realize on a shipment of sailing or on a manoeuvre if cela force abnormally or not. Many, it would distort our data but we are communicating a lot between us on this type of training. It is nice to have outside eyes on my way of doing things. »
After three laps of the world single-handed (two in a multihull and a monohull) and seven years of navigation on the trimaran, the skipper is broken in solitude and endurance exercise. For this 4th the Record attempt around the world single-handed, work on performance is so privileged! " I have more need to spend a lot of time at sea. 24 or 36 h, it's good timing. Beyond, on cumulative fatigue. It is better that I forbid and that I physically strengthens me to Earth at a few weeks of the stand-by. » Says Thomas.

The program of the coming days, still drives! Whether at sea or ashore, now, Thomas Coville has more than one thing in mind: make the tour of the planet by the 3 caps within 57 days, 13 hours, 34 minutes and 6 seconds, record held since 2008 by Francis Joyon.

America's Cup update, Emirates Team New Zealand easily defeat Oracle Team USA 2-0 in todays races, Spithill notes major modification of Oracle's AC72's on the cards during lay day

From the following article on the excellent Sail Racing Magazine website:

No surrender from Spithill as Oracle weigh up major boat modifications.

Despite facing a gargantuan points deficit in the 34th America's Cup Final Oracle Team USA skipper James Spithiil is very far from willing to contemplate and thoughts of conceding defeat.

Today Spithill's team, including subbed in tactician British Olympic hero Ben Ainslie, lost both of their races against the challenger Emirates Team New Zealand who are now just three races short of putting the America's Cup on a plane to New Zealand.

Spithill's crew need to win a staggering 10 races to retain the Cup - a feat which would surely go down as one of sailing's, if not sport in general's, most remarkable comebacks.
Asked what his team needed to do to pull this off, Spithill said they would start by not giving up.

Multi50, FenetreA Cardinal team convincing winners of the 2013 Trophee du Port de Fecamp

From the following article (in French) on fenetreacardinal.com

http://fenetreacardinal.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=145:multi-50--une-copie-sans-faute

and the rough bing translate below:

-˜windowâ Cardinal won the trophy of the port de Fécamp

-The crew won all rounds run

-A good omen before the Transat Jacques Vabre

He had said: the crew of ˜windowâ Cardinal would surely still more sharpened for the trophy of the port of Fécamp. Erwan Le Roux was right: the cohesion of crew, which has increased little by little as as Yann Elies was taking its brands within the sailing team has also benefited from training in double that Erwan and Yann are taxed to come to Fécamp. With in the end, a domination without sharing under the upper-Normandy cliffs.

Grand Slam: it's not every day that in regatta, a crew dominates the others, at this point, the head and shoulders. Although Erwan Le Roux was rather confident before the start of the Trophée de Fécamp, nobody on Board could have foreseen this amazing scenario. The configuration of the water was actually more favourable to men ˜windowâ Cardinal, with longer routes to the breast which the intrinsic speed of the boat was more important. The weather more tonic to Saint-Quay Portrieux also played for the red and black trimaran. But from there to leave only crumbs to his opponents, there was a market that nobody would have dared to take on board.

But now it is days where everything succeeds. Departures well placed, excellent speed, a faultless tactic, and the finger of success necessary for performance of exception, all was there. And the crew took advantage, playing on the virtuous dynamics that often accompanies the good results. These moments of total fluidity are sufficiently rare in a life of marin does not live until the end.

They said :
Erwan le Roux: "It is clear that it was a notch above. Everything went well: a nice speed, maneuvers nickel, the good starts, always just strategic choices, everyone did what he had to do in good timing, it was amazing. The entire crew was perfect. I'm even surprised at the difference in level from the Route of the Princes. It has gained in speed thanks to the new sails, but I thought it would be tighter.
In addition, it is good for confidence before the Transat Jacques Vabre. There are still training to do rides together with Yann to refine our duplicate, but we know that we are on the right track. In the meantime, Let's enjoy because of moments like that, there are not fifty in a marine life."

Farrier F-22 production trimaran, more reflections from Ian Farrier on first test sail

Interview with Wayne Barrett in regards to his new trimaran design for home or custom construction the M80

Wayne Barrett has entered the trimaran design market previously with his excellent 24' MOJO trimaran a spiritual successor to the Crowther Buccaneer 24. His new foray into design is called the M80 a folding trimaran design constructed in developed plywood flat panels. I thought I'd contact Wayne and get the low down on his new design.

Trimaran Project Wayne what was the inspiration behind the new design and what requirements is it designed to cater for?

Wayne Barrett After years of building high performance multihulls on a professional level I know very well the huge amount of hours that they consume. With up to sixteen people working full time for months on one project alone you can then gain some idea of how quickly time passes and always to the best estimates time wins.

Thoughts started rumbling to build a boat of my own being at the wrong end of the age scale there is no time to be delving into the high tech process. This is where the original MOJO was initiated purely for my own use and most importantly a boat that I could comfortably and safely handle on my own. Seemingly the boat that suited me was not for the majority, after studying the feedback from MOJO I decided to draw up the M80.

The M 80 had to be more convenient than MOJO so the folding system was included in the design, a standard accommodation layout was adopted with greater flexibility than the split accommodation of the center cockpit. To cut to your question the M80 is for the sailor who has the time and desire to build his own Trimaran that can be easily assembled within a reasonable period of time.

M80 trimaran, courtesy of Wayne Barrett
Trimaran Project How would you rate the construction of the new design in terms of difficulty? Is it a project a handyman who has no prior boatbuilding experience but is equipped with some basic skills could take on with a high probability of success?

Wayne Barrett The construction or assembly as I prefer to call it is possibly the most basic one can achieve and still provide a good looking tri. If the builder uses the DXF files and has all the parts cut the process is very quick, Finished parts will appear in no time and the enjoyment of self-building will be sent on a new high. With the advent of CNC every small component is accurately precut, eliminating the risk of incorrect measurements. Even the building frame is precut slotting together in the egg crate principal, I have included the float frames within the same assembly as the main hull thus reducing time even more. Any handyman can put together the M 80 and achieve a high standard of finish.

Trimaran Project Trailerability seems to be the new essential does your set of plans include plans for a trailer as well? Or can a generic boat trailer with minor modification be used?

Wayne Barrett At this stage the plans for a trailer are not included, the majority of standard trailers available can be modified to suit.

Trimaran Project There are a lot of variables I know but what are your thoughts as to an approximate costing to build the boat from scratch?

Wayne Barrett Yes the variables are hard to contend with but my best estimates the cost will be around $45 - $50K. maybe a diligent and resourceful builder could build it for less On the other hand with upmarket deck gear, sails, electronics etc. the cost if not watched could skyrocket, this of course is true with any purchase being a boat, a house, car etc.

Trimaran Project Will the boat be available as a precut kit?

Wayne Barrett Yes as mentioned above it is available in a precut version and in my opinion the best way to build, everything is supplied in the plywood kit, with small items like flanges for the deck hatches, Ring frames for some bulkheads, flanges to support the windows, surrounds for the drop boards and the drop boards. There are 35 2440 x 1220 x 9mm. sheets of plywood involved plus a dozen sheets of 16 mm. cheap ply or chipboard for the building frames.

Trimaran Project How does the folding system work? Is it similar to a Farrier system?

Wayne Barrett Yes it employs the same folding principal.

Trimaran Project Grey area I know but what sort of performance do you envision for the boat if built and sailed light?

Wayne Barrett Never have intentions of being the first boat home (or the last) the M80 has a modest rig with a mast height of 10.4 mtr. M 80 sports a self-tacking jib, a prodder can be set of the bow, Which I have drawn at one meter, so quite conservative, I think she will move along quite nicely, the main hull has a reasonable lwl ratio, the floats are very buoyant and the beams Have excellent clearance. The dagger board is quite high aspect with the rudder having plenty of area for control in the light

You can contact Wayne for more details through the contact us form on www.trimarankit.com a website will be up for the new M80 design soon.

“It’s amazing. It’s exciting. It’s wet, fast and fun.” That’s how Will Tiller, the skipper of Full Metal Jacket described sailing the AC45 wing-sail catamaran but he could very well have been talking about the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup itself.

The new competition for national teams of youth sailors aged 19-24 provided thrills, spills and plenty of action over four days of intense racing on San Francisco Bay. The New Zealand Sailing Team with Emirates Team New Zealand had a strong closing day to beat their fierce rivals on Full Metal Jacket (NZL) and the ROFF/Cascais Sailing Team from Portugal to win the inaugural title.

“It’s been amazing to actually take the win,” said Peter Burling, the skipper of the New Zealand Sailing Team. “We got a lot better during the racing. It’s amazing to take the win and quite humbling to do it under the Emirates Team New Zealand banner.”

His rival, Will Tiller, made this a Kiwi one-two on the leaderboard with a strong, consistent performance over the four days of racing.

Resolution of rules infringement by Team Oracle USA for non approved modifications to AC45 catamarans competing in the America's Cup World Series

From the following article on the excellent Sail Racing Magazine website:

Oracle Team USA docked two America's Cup Final points, fined $250,000 and sailors and shore crew excluded from Cup.

The America's Cup international jury has handed down what is being viewed as the toughest penalty in the history of the America's Cup after finding Cup defenders Oracle Team USA guilty of gross misconduct during the America's Cup World Series.

First up the American team owned by Californian software billionaire Larry Ellison has been fined $250,000, but what will hurt Ellison's squad most is having two points deducted in the first to nine race America's Cup Final Series which begins on Saturday.  The jury ruling prescribes that Oracle will lose the points from the first two races they win once racing begins.

The jury decision also affects several members of the Oracle sailing team and shore crew, some of which have been excluded from any further participation in the 34th America's Cup. Amongst the sailors sanctioned are wing trimmer Dirk DeRidder and grinder Matt Mitchell. Trimmer/Grinder Kyle Langford was also implicated but appears to have escaped with a warning.

The maxi-trimaran Sodebo makes his comeback!

As nearly 12 million children, the maxi-trimaran Sodebo has made its back to school Tuesday to La Trinité-sur-Mer. After a little more than two months of summer construction, the giant went to water under the eyes of her skipper Thomas Coville, eager to return to the bar after first part of season devoted to the monohull on Sodebo M34. In the program, a month of training and navigations press before the start of the stand-by for the Record of the round the world single-handed on October 15 in Brest.

Sunny, light breeze, conditions were ideal Tuesday for the launching of the maxi-trimaran Sodebo. An always tricky to carry and grüter a trimaran of 31 meters long and 16.55 meters wide on the 200 meters separating the base Sodebo to Multipole de Saint-Philibert of the launching slipway! Well established in fiscal, Sodebo team carefully orchestrated maneuvers. : matting, establishment of the appendages, sails, the operation requires a half day's work. Once the boat in his element and moored in her home port of La Trinité-sur-Mer, the relief was visible within the team. « It is always important upgrade water! . Is there any part now... If the maxi-trimaran Sodebo has changed since the last attempt of the Record of the round the world single-handed from 2010/2011 - 2012 winter site had allowed forward floats and change the position of the foils - this summer, no significant changes, but rather a general up check. " This remains a consistent construction because it takes a lot of time to remove, check and reassemble all the parts one by one ," said Elie Canivenc, technical manager of Team Sodebo. " We especially worked on the sails in the spring and we were sharper on some details with the arrival of Loïc Le Mignon. We come to maturity, the boat is really as I wanted to, as I imagined. "Adds Thomas.

and the rough bing translate below:

As promised, this is a final breathless intensity that concluded this Sunday the 5th trophy Prince de Bretagne - Côtes d'Armor, marked by the duel at the top between ˜windowâ Cardinal (Erwan Le Roux) and Maître Jacques (Loïc Féquet) throughout three days of racing in contact on the water of Saint-Quay-Portieux. As promised, the verdict was in the final lengths of the last afternoon race, won by Arkema France (Lalou Roucayrol). The aquitanian crew wisely took the fratricidal struggle between the best enemies of the quinoceen venue to steal this victory with the third step of the podium.

"The conditions are wonderful this morning. Between 12-13 knots of wind, bright sunshine, a nice departure from master Jacques, who true to his usual raced in a timing perfect, followed very closely by Arkema Region Aquitaine, and ˜windowâ Cardinal returned to force due to its speed on the edges cross to propel themselves in mind. It is a superb match that we offer the crews. Older vessels are not forgotten, they are also fighting in very beautiful way..." reached by VHF on voiced village of the event, Franck-Yves Escoffier, the Multi50 class president, former skipper broken in these battles of shells still very spectacular, set the scene and presents the actors. It gives especially the extent of the last series of regattas at the end of which will be designated the winner of an appointment, which certainly does not lie its level of competitiveness. Invited to do not miss anything show on water, both from the bleachers installed at the end of the dike of the port of Armor, than from the deck of the stars of the Sept îles multiplying rotations, the public, come many, has not shunned his pleasure to be in such sports festival.

Inning of game
The magnificent second make the most beautiful winners. It is this relentless observation that ends the Prince de Bretagne - Côtes d'Armor 2013 trophy. Difficult in effect of unsharing Erwan Le Roux and Loïc Féquet, crews which have never ceased to fly the politeness on the departures as on the incoming lines in favourable conditions for many reversals of situation. Tie points last night, still tied at the end of the penultimate regatta, it is at the rate of a round of very removed match the Trinitiain accompanied by Yann Eliès, Daniel Souben, Antoine Carpentier and Didier Le Vourc'h ' h has finally prevailed out of some short bows. The five man crew can let explode their joy and express their satisfaction. Their fighting spirit, their perseverance and their reactivity to make the most of their platform allowed them to not let escape a final victory throw-in on each edge of each of the twelve races contested in three days.

A victory for a podium

The St. Malo have indeed not unworthy aboard their multihulls trying all for all to push their rival to fault in a wind of 10 knots and under a radiant Sun. It is in is necessary, while their side men of Arkema France (Lalou Roucayrol), to fight with the crew of Actual (Yves Le Blévec) for the third step of the podium, did not miss intuition to let these two here bickering until the end and in their corner. First all the long of the two towers, a neck victory that makes them big.

Ray green, second winner
On the side of the older boats, led by amateur crews have animated the waterbody of their enthusiasm and their pleasure of sailing aboard multihulls historical, witnesses the vitality of a series that renews itself as much as it perpetuates. The 6th place, that of all the honors for this category of trimarans who always under the floats back to Rayon Vert (Alain Delhumeau). His crew, newcomer on this Prince de Bretagne - Côtes d'Armor trophy, which has been committed to shine and do not yield to kid (Pierre-Antoine), did not go unnoticed. Erwan le Roux (Cardinal ˜windowâ):
"We are really happy, this has been a struggle for top-flight against perennial and tough competition. It is well that it ends like this, it's top! Guys well worked. We were a little surprised when they (Maître Jacques, Editor's note) came to pick us up in a match just on the last, they we taken on the left, they were priority and it took tear himself away to return. Arkema Region Aquitaine arrives to win a round, and master Jacques, who is a vessel of 2005 showed he was squarely in the shot. "This means many things: that the class is dynamic and that the level of competition is guaranteed."

Loïc Fequet (Maître Jacques): "We are very happy with this result. It's great to fight at this level here! Both crews were able to win the event, it is played to nothing. "The crew did super well sailed, the boat confirms its potential at the small time and we took in also to test a new gennaker which gives, too, any satisfaction."

Lalou Roucayrol (Arkema France):
"It ends much better that it started for us. We had not much to lose, we were very motivated to finish on a good note. This is a good move since even if we finish equal on points with Actual, round victory allows us to get on the podium. We much transformed the boat since our victory on the Princes Highway. On board we have a little suffered have not much been able to train before coming here in Saint-Quay-Portrieux, and run with old sails. On the other hand, we also saw that we could be at ease on certain phases, and especially that the machine navigates well. "Yesterday and today, we had ideal conditions, we still also welcomed here, it is a pleasure."
