Extreme Sailing Series, Alinghi win final event of the year (Sydney) and the Extreme Sailing Series for 2014

From the following news article on the extreme sailing series website:

http://www.extremesailingseries.com/news/view/alinghi-crowned-2014-sydney-champions-in-the-best-days-racing-of-the-year#.VJEGC68cR8Q

- Alinghi snatch Act victory in Sydney and with it become 2014 Extreme Sailing Series™ Champions after 231 races this year.
- Second place for The Wave, Muscat while Realteam take third in Sydney and in the Series.
- Capsize for GAC Pindar cuts their regatta following a collision with Realteam.
- Replay today’s edge of the seat final races from Act 8 Sydney presented by Land Rover here – you don’t want to miss it!
- Just over seven weeks until the 2015 global tour kicks off in Singapore, 5th February, including a full starting grid of top international teams!

It is mission accomplished for Ernesto Bertarelli’s Swiss team Alinghi, as Morgan Larson and the team grabbed victory with both hands at Act 8 Sydney, presented by Land Rover, and with it the 2014 Extreme Sailing Series™ title – and Larson’s words say it all: “We’ve had an amazing season with an amazing team. To win the season and the Act on the last day in the conditions we had here in Sydney, which is the best sailing venue in the world, is a special moment that’s going to take a long time to sink in. The level of confidence that we have on our boat just made me realise I can win anything with these guys. This is the best feeling I’ve had all year and probably in the whole of my sailing career, so I’m going to cherish it.”

Multi23 Mk2 trimaran updated model lighter in weight and offers more features

Phillipe Mallajac of Torpen International Boats the manufacturers of the Multi23 trimaran have forwarded the following press release which covers the updated version the Multi23 Mk2:

For those who still don’t know yet about the Multi 23 trimaran,
she is a kind small amazing replica of the famous Maxi Trimarans “Orma 60”, but only 6,72 m long, both designed by the renowned naval architects firm Van Peteghem Lauriot Prévost (VPLP) and built by the French shipyard “Torpen International Boats” up to more than 90 boats sailing worldwide, and… she is about to make her revolution! The shipyard announced the launching of the Multi23 MKII version, whom received a lot of improvements.

This new version is still built using infusion technology and high quality materials (Epoxy, carbon, vinyl ester, PVC foam core, …), which make her very light, but she receive now more reinforcements in carbon such as the beams 80% carbon and wherever it was necessary.
This new version of Multi 23 is more stiff, more responsive and faster than the previous one, she starts flying even in the slightest breeze!

Standard Multi 23 is still delivered with completely sufficient rigging of 3 sails (Mainsail with 2 reefs, Self Tacking Jib, Gennaker).
The Optimization of rudder system (100% carbon now) and the retractable centreboard, particularly by increasing strong carbon structural reinforcements, gives them reliability to withstand the forces generated by high speeds over 20 knots allowed by the design of the platform.
Among the new options, some are nicely surprising, such as:
Mast travelers allow effortless hoisting of the mainsail and add safety by controlling dowsing, even on the run, in case of reefing or simply when approaching to the mooring place. Raising up the Main becomes a child’s play!
Superb 100% Carbon Bowsprit for those requesting the asymmetric Spinnaker.

All on board is high quality equipment: the hardwares are signed “Karver Systems”, including Jib & Gennaker easy furling systems and a very well ingenious Single Jib sheet, crossing through the main beam and  mounted on a 180° swivel cleat tower. We appreciate the optimization of the operating commands wherever you are on the platform, the solo sailors will be really delighted!

In few words: Easy to handle, Speed, Stability and Safety are key points for this new Multi23, she has the talented skills to combine high performances as a sport-boat for racing, but also a user-friendly day-boat for family sailing or hiking…
Pure and unimaginable sailing sensations, we love it!

Corsair Pulse 600 trimaran update, tooling coming together at Corsair Factory

From the latest update by Corsair:

http://sail.corsairmarine.com/update-3-on-pulse-600-development

With the hull, beam and float moulds all complete, the attention is now on the deck mould as the last major moulding to be completed before the first product can be produced. Here are some recent photos and insight into the current developments:

To make the deck mould, we first have to make the male plug. We do this using a series of CNC cut parts, which we slot into the hull shape before finishing with a filling material which is then sanded back by hand. We do this on a hull part so that we can be absolutely sure the hull and deck join aligns 100% every time as the parts themselves are made completely separately.

GC32 catamaran update, dates and venues announced for 2015 circuit

From the following press release on the Great Cup website:

http://www.thegreatcup.com/newsitem.aspx?newsId=3d703ddd-870d-44ac-b069-7818aa22585f&month=11&year=2014

GC32 Racing Tour 2015 - dates and venues

Representing the state-of-the-art in catamaran design, the GC32 is attracting considerable interest due to its conceptual similarity to the AC72 and AC62 foiling catamarans pioneered in the America’s Cup. However as the GC32s are smaller one designs with soft sail rigs, they provide both professional teams and private owners with the opportunity to experience airborne catamaran racing and all the excitement of the larger AC catamarans, but on a much more modest budget and on boats that are far easier to handle while still having the potential to achieve top speeds approaching 40 knots.

The 2015 GC32 Racing Tour schedule:

27-31 May: Austria Cup - Lake Traunsee, Austria

24–27 June: Cowes Cup - Cowes, UK

30 July–2 Aug: TBA - Germany

27-30 August: Trofeo di Roma - Rome Fiumicino, Italy

10–13 September: Marseille One Design – Marseille, France.

Route du Rhum update, A good article with more details by Loick Peyron on his race winning effort on Banque Populaire VII

From the following article on the Route du Rhum website:

http://www.routedurhum.com/en/s03_actualites/s03p02_detail_actualite.php?actu=757

Thirty two years after the first of his seven attempts, French ocean racing star Loick Peyron won the mythical Route du Rhum-Destination Guadeloupe this Monday morning (TU) when he crossed the finish line of the solo race from Saint-Malo France to Pointe-a-Pitre at 04:08:32 TU/05:08:32 CET/00:08:32 local

The lone skipper of the 31.5m (103ft) Ultime trimaran Maxi Solo Banque Populaire VII completed the 3542 miles course in 7d 15h 8m 32s.

His elapsed time is a new outright record for the course passage which was first raced in 1982, breaking the 2006 reference time set by Lionel Lemonchois (7 days 17 hours and 9 mInutes) by 2hrs 10mins 34secs.

Peyron sailed the 3524 NMs theoretical course at an average of 19.34kts. In reality he sailed 4199NM at an average of 22.93kts.

Looking relaxed and on good form physically, Peyron acknowledged, pledging to be back in four years time on the little yellow boat:

Route du Rhum update, Loick Peyron on track for new record on BPVII closely fought battle in the Multi50's

Loick Peyron on BPVII is approaching the finish with about 39nm to go and it appears he will improve on the outright record time for the race.  Yann Guichard is in second place on Spindrift 2 and well behind (over 200nm now).  Sebastian Josse has moved up into third place with Lionel Lemonchois dropping back to fourth.

http://www.routedurhum.com/fr/s02_corporate/s02p08_cartographie.php

In the Multi50's Erwan Le Roux on FenetreA Cardinal is holding off Lalou Roucayrol on Arkema who is in second place for now but it's close.  Third place is held by Gilles Lamire on Rennes Metropole St Malo Agglomeration.

In the Rhum class Anne Caseneuve on the trimaran ANEO has moved into the lead and extending away the canting keel monohull being skippered by Andrea Mura Vento Di Sardegna.

Route du Rhum update, Loick still ahead of the pack in the Ultimes

Loick Peyron (BPVII) still has a solid lead over Yann Guichard (Spindrift2) in the Ultimes.  Lionel Lemonchois has consolidated his position in third.

In the Multi50's Lalou Roucayrol on Arkema has been overtaken by Erwan Le Roux on FenetreA Cardinal with Gilles Lamire on Rennes Metropole St Malo Agglomeration moving into third, Yves Le Blevec on Actual well behind after the technical stop at Cascais.

In the Rhum class Anne Caseneuve on the trimaran ANEO has closed the gap a little on Andrea Mura on Vento di Sardegna.

Route du Rhum update, Loick leads the Ultime fleet in impressive fashion

Loick is doing well out the front of the fleet, BPVII is a more wieldy boat from a solo perspective than Spindrift 2 but if Yann can get some more stable weather he might be able to exploit the power of the boat a little better. The big story for me is how well Sebastian Josse is doing on the modified MOD70 Edmond de Rothschild he is punching well above his weight to hold onto a solid third in the Ultime class.

In the Multi50's some strategic positioning by Lalou Roucayrol on Arkema has seen him take the lead. Lalou's early strategy saw him go for a more Westerly route initially and has given him sea room and kept him out of the worst seastates that the boats went inshore had to deal with. Team Actual has to drop into Cascais for repairs to their wind instruments which will allow FenetreA Cardinal to sneak away into a more solid second place.

In the Rhum Class Route du Rhum veteran Anne Casaneuve is the leading multihull second behind the powerful canting keel monohull Vento di Sardegna.

The Route du Rhum news coverage and tracker is excellent so I will just give a summary each day and wont attempt to repost all the news here best to just visit the Route du Rhum website for full updates:

Jour 2 : rock'n roll ... by routedurhum

Route du Rhum update, Loick Peyron in the lead on Banque Populaire VII and retirements Sodebo Ultime and Multi50 Maitre Jacques

Currently Loick Peyron on Banque Populaire VII is leading the field in the Route du Rhum.

http://www.routedurhum.com/fr/s02_corporate/s02p08_cartographie.php

Thomas Coville on Sodebo Ultime has been forced to retire after suffering float and main hull damage after a collision with a cargo ship.  Skipper is uninjured and coaxing the boat to the Port of Roscoff:

a rough bing translate of the article here:

http://www.routedurhum.com/fr/s03_actualites/s03p02_detail_actualite.php?actu=448

Sunday, November 2 at 11: 30 pm, the Cross has informed the direction of the Route du Rhum race - Destination Guadeloupe than Sodebo Ultim' had collided with a cargo ship and its skipper was unharmed. The trimaran was almost out of the rail and sailed under 3 reefs and ORC, progressing at a speed of 15/18 knots in Active grains by 30 knots of wind Southwest.
In the clash, the trimaran has lost forward of the starboard float until the link arm. The central hull seems to have been also damaged at the front. Sodebo Ultim' is headed for the port of Roscoff, crosswind, under reduced sail, supported on the port float. Currently forward in a dozen nodes. In approaching the coast of Brittany, the wind will ease and the sea is mellowing. Its technical team which was on standby in Brest will travel at night to Roscoff where the trimaran is expected in the morning.

More bad news with the Multi50 Maitre Jacques being forced to retire with starboard float damage:

http://www.routedurhum.com/fr/s03_actualites/s03p02_detail_actualite.php?actu=446

rough bing translate below:

To 11 pm this Sunday, the starboard float of Maître Jacques broke. He then was in 4th position of the Route du Rhum - Destination Guadeloupe, in the category of Multi 50. Loïc Féquet was about to wrap the tip of Brittany, and was sailing near the coast. It is not in danger, there is no risk of Dismasting, but the boat is not operating.

A tug of the SNSM comes from sailing to tow it to the nearest port, it should be on area about 2 o'clock in the morning.

Loïc Féquet, skipper of the Multi 50 master Jacques: "there were 25-28 knots and seas, but I wasn't to attack, on the contrary! I was under two ris staysail. I hit nothing. It broke exactly at the same place as last year *, but this time, the float is brand new... »

The master Jacques skipper has secured his boat. It is only 7 miles (13 km) sides and derivative at two knots approximately to the North. Loïc is inside his boat while awaiting relief.

Route du Rhum departs into rough conditions

The Route du Rhum is underway with competitors being faced with tough conditions for the first 48 hours at least.  The Ultimes are likely to sail through the worst of the conditions far more quickly than the rest of the fleet and reach more favourable conditions to the South.

The tracker is active on the Route du Rhum website:

Rapido trimarans, new website with details of Rapido 60 trimaran which is designed by Morelli and Melvin

From the following Concept and Design section of the Rapido Trimarans website:

http://www.rapidotrimarans.com/the-concept.html

CONCEPT and DESIGN

A yacht designed and built by real sailors for real sailors…..

…and meets CE  A and ISAF Category 0 offshore for multihulls ( for trans-oceanic races and capable of withstanding heavy storms…).

Take the highly experienced sailors that have built more production trimarans than anyone else in the world and team them up with the best multihull design group in the world---the result is an innovative ocean cruising yacht, the first of its kind.

Safe. Seaworthy. Spacious. Stable. Fast. and Strong!

The Rapido 60, conceived by Paul Koch and Richard Eyre, and designed by Morrelli & Melvin will set the benchmark for genuine performance ocean cruising yachts.

We are not talking about a stripped out racing yacht pretending to be a cruiser or a super expensive cruiser that makes performance claims that cannot possibly be lived up to due to weight.

Round the world and distance records are held by trimarans for good reasons. They are easier and safer to handle even in the storms of the Southern Ocean. They are more comfortable and faster on all points of sail. They are easier on the crew because the motion of a trimaran in the sea is superior to both monohulls and catamarans.

Monohulls typically sail at least 20 degrees of heel and roll at anchor, which makes living aboard uncomfortable and even exhausting. Catamarans are extremely comfortable when moored and at the boat show and many inexperienced sailors are seduced by this false sense of comfort.

Spindrift Racing update, Yann Guichard and Spindrift 2 maxi trimaran in St Malo awaiting start of the Route du Rhum

From the following press release on the Spindrift Racing website:

http://www.spindrift-racing.com/2014/10/francais-yann-guichard-et-spindrift-2-dans-les-starting-blocks-a-saint-malo/
- The maxi-trimaran Spindrift 2 arrived in Saint-Malo this morning, docking at the Gare Maritime.
- Yann Guichard feels in great shape and is ready to go.
- Information about Spindrift racing’s activities in the race village.
- How to follow Yann Guichard and Spindrift 2 during the race.

Never in the race’s 36-year history have there been so many competitors and so many huge trimarans. The 10th edition of the most famous single-handed transatlantic yacht race is already rewriting the record books. A record 91 sailors were in Saint-Malo this Friday for the opening of the official village, in the shadow of the city walls. As happens every year, large crowds will line the docks of the Breton city for the race start on Sunday, November 2nd. Perhaps the record 2 million visitors in 2010 will also be broken. What we can say for certain is that, at 40 metres long, Spindrift 2 will be the largest boat ever to compete in the race. You might think the skipper, Yann Guichard, was crazy, but the 40-year-old has every confidence in the preparations made by his team to make the maxi-trimaran competitive when raced by a single yachstman. Yann is driven by his competitive spirit, and is all set to do battle.

Racing proa design 'Bucket list' by Rob Denney

From the following article by designer Rob Denney on his very interesting offshore capable and container transportable racing proa:

http://harryproa.com/index.php/design/20-racing/56-bucket-list

Bucket List has a fuse on the main sheet cleat which releases at 30 degrees of pitch or heel. If it does capsize, the buoyant mast stops it going past 90° from where the buoyant boom will right it without the crew getting wet.

The rudders kick up in a collision or grounding and are easily lifted, resulting in a 100mm draft with nothing to trip over on a breaking wave, and the ability to surf up the beach and step ashore as a last resort.

Large, easily replaced foam/glass buffers on the hull ends minimise collision damage.
The single sail rig means you never have to venture outside the beams. There is no dangerous foredeck work, and none of the dramas associated with extras. The wishbone boom is above head height if you are on the tramp.

The hulls are foam cored and compartmentalised. Even if it was severely holed, Bucket List would still float and could still sail.

The flexible mast automatically dumps power in an unexpected gust. The absence of stays means the sail can be reefed, raised, lowered or totally eased on any point of sail and any wind strength.

Extreme Sailing Series, Alinghi team victorious in Nice

From the following press release on Extreme Sailing Series website:

http://www.extremesailingseries.com/news/view/morgan-larson-has-one-hand-on-the-2014-series-trophy-after-alinghi-snatch-v#.VDHxEq8cTrd

- Realteam narrowly denied their first Act win, after an edge of the seat final race shoot out.
- J.P. Morgan BAR take their second podium position of the year finishing third – the Brits are getting stronger and stronger.
- Only four days of racing left in 2014 with mathematically five teams – Alinghi, The Wave, Muscat, Emirates Team New Zealand, Realteam and J.P. Morgan BAR - capable of a podium position as the fleet head Down Under to Sydney, Australia, for the final Act of the year.
- Land Rover ‘Above & Beyond Award’ goes to Oman Sail boat builder Suleiman Al Manji who received the ultimate sporting call-up when he swapped his Omani kit for the Emirates Team New Zealand shirt to become an integral part of the pro race team on day two.
Morgan Larson and the Swiss team Alinghi snatched victory from the hands of their fellow countrymen Realteam in the final race at the Extreme Sailing Series™ in Nice, to take victory on French waters in front of thousands of spectators – and with that they now have one hand firmly placed on the 2014 Series trophy. With only one Act to go this year, Alinghi have extended their lead at the top of the Series leaderboard to eight points over The Wave, Muscat, but with 20 points up for the taking in Sydney, and five teams capable of a podium position, it’s not over until it’s over, and as Larson commented, it is just getting harder and harder to win races. “We were confident at the start of the year that we had a little bit of an edge, but now the rest of the field are showing some real force. I think now you are seeing the future. More than half the fleet have the ability to win an event, and that’s exactly what we’re going to see going into Sydney.  That event is going to be worth double points, and if we go out with a bad performance and The Wave, Muscat or Emirates Team New Zealand come in with a strong one - we’re going to lose. So we’ve got to go out and try and get back on the podium.”

Extreme Sailing Series returns to Nice for Act 7 of the 2014 season

From the following press release on the Extreme Sailing Series website:

http://www.extremesailingseries.com/news/view/tensions-high-ahead-of-penultimate-showdown#.VC0wIK8cTrc

The 2014 Extreme Sailing Series™ is nearing its final stages with just one European Act left on the global tour, taking place this week in Nice, Cote d’Azur, before the final in Sydney, Australia. For the 11-strong fleet, it’s crunch time, and Freddie Carr gives his predictions on the leaderboard battles, at this pivotal point in the Series.

The whole event in Istanbul (Act 6) for me had a bit of needle about it, and to be honest, it really picked up from the double points final race in Cardiff, Wales at Act 5. We predicted Istanbul to step up a level in terms of aggression, and it really did. Going into the final race in Turkey where Morgan Larson’s Alinghi had third position pretty much locked in, the team turned it around and basically sailed The Wave, Muscat to the back of the fleet, doing all they could to make sure the Omani team didn’t win, and ensuring Emirates Team New Zealand did. Tensions were running high. I’ve known Leigh McMillan (The Wave, Muscat skipper) for 20 years and I haven’t seen him as emotional and as upset as he was after that double points final race in Turkey. There’s absolutely no doubt in my mind that we’re going to pick up from where we left off in Nice for the penultimate Act of the 2014 season.

Armin Strom team victorious in GC32 catamarans at the Marseille One Design event

From the following press release on thegreatcup.com

http://www.thegreatcup.com/newsitem.aspx?newsId=06a40871-16fd-46b8-94c5-f26fe90eb0c9&month=09&year=2014

Flavio Marazzi and his Armin Strom Sailing Team crew came out all guns blazing today to claim first place in the GC32 foiling catamaran class at the inaugural edition of Marseille One Design.

A light forecast didn’t look promising for the fourth and final day’s racing on Marseille’s Roucas Blanc, but the breeze filled in and built to around 15 knots at lunch time and the race committee was able to squeeze in four races before the final cut off of 15:00 local time.

For the first time in this regatta, the sea breeze today was from the southwest, blowing into the bay and surprisingly was more volatile than on previous days, very shifty and ranging in strength from 5-15 knots. As a result much came down to the tactical calls and there was more tacking and gybing and splits to opposite sides of the race course. This made for an exciting day with plenty of lead changes and close calls. It was also challenging for the crews with their boats at times fully powered up and foiling, or, at others, coming off the foils and ‘low riding’ when the wind dropped.

Sidney Gavignet completes solo qualification for Route du Rhum on the Multi70 Musandam/Oman Sail

From the following article on BYMnews:

http://bymnews.com/news/newsDetails.php?id=137740

Sidney Gavignet, French skipper of the Sultanate of Oman’s flagship Musandam-Oman Sail, completed the single-handed 1,000 nautical mile Route du Rhum qualifier over the weekend marking the start of his race to prepare for one of the biggest challenges of his career and providing a new benchmark for Oman Sail's Omani sailors to aspire to.

With the fully-crewed racing season behind him, including the epic sprint around Great Britain and Ireland with a 50% Omani crew for the first time, obliterating the record set by a boat almost twice the size, and setting a new one at 3 days 3 hours 32 minutes and 36 seconds, Sidney Gavignet is now fully focussed on preparations for November's Route du Rhum.

“It is back to school for me,” he said on Sunday morning in Lorient after four and a half days at sea alone. “I was lucky with my first solo experience, the conditions were favourable which is a very good way to start and I was happy to get four and a half days of experience in one hit as it is unlikely to be possible again during my training,” he said.

Hydros Team smash record on the Munich-Rapperswil-Munich route on Lake Zurich

From the following article (in German) on 20 minuten:

The rough bing translate is below:

http://www.20min.ch/schweiz/zuerich/story/31746558

Lorenz von Meiss - for the line Zurich-Rapperswil and back the catamaran of hydros needed only 2 hours and 25 minutes. Thus, the previous fastest was undercut by almost an hour.

The catamaran «Hydros» breaking the existing speed record on the line Zurich-Rapperswil Zürich.

One of the most modern catamarans in the world was developed in cooperation with the EPFL. With almost 50 km/h, the catamaran plowed this week by the waves of the Lake of Zurich. For sailing expert Caspar Büttner several conditions must be fulfilled in order to set a speed record: «as first you need Of course a really fast boat and knowing how to work around it.» Also the wind conditions must accept in order to make such a record», says Badenhorst.

Low water resistance

The wing installed on the hydros allow a minimum water resistance and higher top speeds the sailing ship. Further is a system of hydraulic pumps aboard to optimally explore the ship. The previous best mark for the long-haul distance Zurich-Rapperswil and back was 3 hours and 18 minutes and was in the year 1990 also by a catamaran set up. Only if fit all circumstances, such a record can be set.

Hydros Foundation receives financial support from the Geneva private bank Lombard Odier. The Bank supports the development of new technologies and more efficient research projects. The Foundation of hydros is also planning a motor boat with the same wing technology as the catamaran. The lower water resistance to help consume less fuel.

LOÏCK PEYRON WILL REPLACE ARMEL LE CLÉAC ' H FOR THE ROUTE DU RHUM
Thursday, September 04, 2014 - 09 h 15
Armel Le Cléac ' h, skipper of the Maxi Solo Bank Populaire VII, severely wounded in the hand and forced to forfeit for the Route du Rhum - Destination Guadeloupe 2014, will be replaced, the time of this race, Loïck Peyron. People's Bank, in perfect harmony with its skipper, naturally turned to the browser from La Baule, a great connoisseur of multihulls which won the Jules Verne trophy aboard the Maxi Bank popular V in 2012.

Loïck Peyron, quickly seduced by this opportunity, took time to reflect before agreeing to this challenge. Navigation test aboard the Maxi Trimaran with the Team Banque Populaire allowed him to judge the intrinsic frame and, it is excited by this great challenge posed by participation in the Route du Rhum in the final category, that it will align at the start of the most famous of the transatlantic with the trimaran wearing the colours of the Bank of the sail.

Armel Le Cléac ' h, which control perfectly its support, will accompany Loïck Peyron in his preparation for him deliver all his experience gained in 4 transatlantic and 2 records carried out aboard the Maxi Solo Bank Populaire VII.
At the same time, in agreement with Banque Populaire, which he retains all his confidence, it will focus during this period forced ashore on the construction of the new monohull Banque Populaire for the Vendée Globe 2016-2017.

Windrider to distribute Astus trimarans in the US

From the following entry on Small Trimarans blog:

Windrider has just Signed a deal with Astus Boats to sell their trimarans in the United States. The online version of the marine industry magazine, “Trade Only Today,” posted this news a few days ago (on August 27th).

That’s pretty neat. I’ve periodically wondered when (if) somebody would become an Astus dealer here in the US. The Astus trimarans are featured in the book, “More Small Trimarans.” You can also find out more about them at the website of one of their European dealers here.

Yann Guichard successful in solo qualification run from Horta in the Azores to La Trinite sur Mer for the Route du Rhum

From the following press release from the Spindrift Racing team:

http://www.spindrift-racing.com/2014/09/40-metres-en-solo-episode-21-yann-guichard-and-spindrift-2-successfully-qualified-for-the-route-du-rhum/

« Solo sailing a trimaran the size of Spindrift 2 requires complete physical commitment, » says Yann Guichard, who recently sailed from the Azores to La Trinité-sur-Mer, alone at the helm of the world’s largest racing multihull. With two months to go before the start of the Route du Rhum-Destination Guadeloupe, the skipper arrived late Monday afternoon and appeared positive and satisfied with his single-handed sail. His arrival fulfils the compulsory qualification required for the event.

Since Spindrift 2 was launched in 2008, nobody has had the audacity to sail this maxi-trimaran single-handed. The 40 metres long Spindrift 2 was designed to be raced by crews and holds several respective major ocean-sailing records. Spindrift racing thought long and hard about taking part in the Route du Rhum, adapting the trimaran especially for this epic race which will commence on November 2nd this year. The cockpit has been redesigned for use by a single-handed sailor, with the commands placed suitably within reach. Meanwhile, the surface area of the sails has been reduced by around 20% and an ingenious autopilot system has been fitted. The trimaran has not been reduced in size, however, and Spindrift 2 remains by far the largest boat taking part in the 10th edition of the most iconic of transatlantic races.

Team Vodafone Sailing relaunch their ORMA60 trimaran

Surely one of the most unlucky teams in regards to mast failures.  Team Vodafone have just relaunched their ORMA 60 trimaran "Team Vodafone" this boat is none other than the former ORMA60 "Geant" once skippered by the professor Michael Desjoyeaux in which he sailed to victory solo in the storm battered 2002 Route du Rhum.

Armel le Cleac'h seriously injures hand and will be unable to compete in the upcoming Route du Rhum on maxi trimaran Banque Populaire VII

From the following press release (in French) by the Banque Populaire team:

The rough bing translate is below:

Tuesday, August 26, 2014 - 4:30 pm

Armel Le Cléac ' h, skipper of the Maxi Solo Bank Populaire VII, was an opportunity for the 10th

edition of the Route du Rhum - Destination Guadeloupe November 2. It was unfortunately injured severely to the right hand, which prevented him from taking the start and forced him to forfeit.

Victim of an accident, Armel is seriously wounded in the right hand. Consulted doctors have issued a negative opinion to its participation in the next Route du Rhum. The skipper of the Bank of the sail will use the coming months to recover and be able to browse again with all his faculties as soon as the water of the new monohull Banque Populaire.

This accident does not call into question the presence of Banque Populaire on the starting line of the 10th edition of the Route du Rhum - Destination Guadeloupe November 2. Indeed, the Bank of the sail, with the help of Armel, makes every effort to quickly designate a skipper for this test.
Armel Le Cléac ' h, skipper of the Maxi Bank Populaire VII:

"It's a terrible disappointment to have had this accident. We were well prepared for this Route du Rhum, I felt ready for this challenge, but it is like that... Now, let's focus on healing so I find all my abilities and that I am ready for the program with the new monohull Banque Populaire which will be put in the water. This will be my new goal for the coming months. »

Spindrift Racing update, maxi trimaran Spindrift 2 breaks starboard float rudder after impact with container on return trip to La Trinite sur Mer

From the following press release on the Spindrift Racing website:

http://www.spindrift-racing.com/2014/08/spindrift-racing-series-40-metres-solo-special-episode-part-1/

An unscheduled episode of 40 metres en solo, as the Route du Rhum adventure continues…

On Friday August 22nd, as night fell over the mid-Atlantic, midway between Newport and La Trinité-sur-Mer, Spindrift 2’s starboard float rudder broke in two under the hull. The maxi-trimaran hit what appears to have been a container drifting in the middle of the ocean.
Despite the significant impact, nobody on board was hurt and there does not seem to be any further damage to the boat. Yann Guichard left the USA on August 18th and had planned to drop off his crew members in the Azores, before sailing back to Brittany single-handed to prepare for the Route du Rhum-Destination Guadeloupe. Due to the damage, the trimaran has been forced to reduce its speed as it heads for the port of Horta. Spindrift 2 is expected to arrive at the Azorean capital, on Faial island, on Sunday morning.

Spindrift racing’s technical team was immediately called into action, and is pulling out all the stops to allow the boat to return to open waters as soon as possible. The replacement rudder will be flown out to the Azores, along with several of the team’s technicians.

Hitting a whale, dolphin, iceberg or any other drifting objects while on board a carbon-fibre multihull travelling at 25 knots is a frightening scenario, with potentially devastating consequences. Striking a container out at sea is most unfortunate, but happens more and more often, and is a sad reflection of the state of today’s oceans. Yann Guichard and his men realise that the damage could have been much worse, and are focusing now on the future.

Article on the Hydroptere program by Alice Myhre

By Alice Myhre

They dreamed, they did! In 1963, the publication of The 40-knot sailboat Bernard Smith, navigate 72 km / h is science fiction. Forty-five years later, in 2008, the team of Alain Thebault shouts of joy when the Hydrofoil, flying over the waves, breaking the "wall of wind": 50 knots under sail (92.6 km / h)!

In Greek hydros means "water," ptère, "wing". You understand that this is a device that combines aerospace and marine engineering. "We're like weightless, 5 or 6 feet above the water: it was like being on a magic carpet," says Alain Thebault. The secret? The foils, kinds of shaped wings that move in the water. Thanks to them, the boats take off, only connected to the sea by three foils. Supported by these submerged wings, boats double their speed in the blink of an eye. While afloat, the speed of a sailboat is limited by its length, when it was drawn up on the foils, the water is no longer an obstacle but a fulcrum. Thus, Hydrofoil, with only 2.5 m2 in contact with the water, sailing at 30 knots with a wind of 15! It's wanting to overcome the laws of physics that some enthusiasts have devised this system. But it took a hundred years of research before coming to near perfection: the Hydrofoil Alain Thebault.

Suspended in the air

In 1861, wanting to test wings planned for the first aircraft, the British Thomas Moy discovered the principle of the hydrofoil. The idea, once launched, will spread gradually. Sailboats to powerboats, experiments are linked to the United States and Europe. Many engineers are interested, including big names such as Alexander Graham Bell. The latter, after having equipped with foils motorboats, Nancy realizes, a model sailboat equipped with this wing. We are in 1912 and eight years later, the first patent was filed by Malcolm Thomas McIntyre and brothers. Their boat he sailed really? It

remains a mystery.

Testing, from 1938, models in her bathtub, Robert Gilruth initiate a turn. In the living room of his apartment, the future director of NASA goes from scratch to develop the first hydrofoil on water: Catafoil. In 1941, in the Chesapeake Bay on the East Coast of the United States, this boat has a great foil in "v" takes off. "It was a great time, we sailed low in the water at about 4 knots trying to catch a sailboat ... After having passed, we got up on the foils. You can imagine their shocked looks when we went to about 12 knots, hanging in the air, "tell the pioneer.

Then, in the 1950s, Gordon Baker, technology enthusiast, dreams of designing a hydrofoil sailboat marketable. This project, funded by the Navy, gave birth to the Monitor. After seventeen years of research, Baker finally pilot his car, whose stability is surprising. Hands on a car steering wheel, it reaches 35 knots, a record that will not be beaten 35 years later! Paradoxically, this engineering gem can not find opportunities. Well, not quite. Ten years later, the American David Keiper, he still believes. He dreams of a foiling trimaran can take off. He designs the Williwaw. The boat, equipped with retractable foils, travels the oceans. It carries 20,000 nautical miles, solo or in teams. Even if it is not built for speed records, the hydrofoil is propelled into the era of sailing the high seas.

"We're going to be scared"

Meanwhile, Eric Tabarly, driven by instinct, think the future of racing through the multihulls. Aboard his giant trimaran Pen Duick IV, lighter, less sail and easier to maneuver solo skipper search pure speed. In 1968 he crossed the Atlantic in 10 days and 11 hours, smashing all records! A year later, he discovered for the first time a hydrofoil: the Williwaw. This face-to-face give him wings to embark on a new project: the construction of the Paul Ricard which transposes the foils on an "offshore racing machine."

The initial objective of improving the stability and drift boat is quickly exceeded. Engineers, especially Pierre Perrier, revved "They began their study, following the idea that I had given them, but less shy than me, they arrived quickly to take off the boat for them c. really was the way forward, "explained Tabarly. Based on a hull Tornado, they build a prototype in 1976 whose essays are dreaming. Unfortunately, the materials of the time did not allow to build the full-scale machine. Tabarly was stuck with the Paul Ricard, a pale copy that can take off only partially. Shortly afterwards, Alain Thebault intervenes. He contacted Tabarly, takes the original project and began building what would become Hydrofoil.

Between the first model produced in 1985 and the first record broken by hydrofoil in 2005, the team of Alain Thebault had to sail in troubled waters. "We flew over the area still little known high speed sailing. I think at times we will be afraid," confided at the time Alain Thebault ("The Hydrofoil, the breath of a dream" by Thalassa). Indeed, the challenge is to marry the lightness and strength of the boat. The foils must be particularly robust to withstand stronger than that experienced by the wings of fighter planes pressure twice. In addition, when the node 50 reaches Hydrofoil, water boils around airfoils, thus reducing the stability of the vessel, among others. A year after their first flight, floats breaks during an event at sea. "It [was] glad I brought the boat. This was not granted," recalls Alain Thebault. After several failed attempts, they finally manage to beat their first record.

The instinct of the Marine is not enough

It was in 2005 that the Hydrofoil IV gained a few precious seconds on 35 minutes set by the aviator Louis Bleriot between Dover and Calais. Then addressing the world speed records, the creature becomes the world's fastest boat. In 2008, breaking through the 100 km / h, the team will pay his madness a spectacular dismasted. "We really had the wind barrier This is quite extraordinary in terms of skiing and feel very airline. It ended badly, but hey, is cleared as pioneers. " But with a top speed of 56 knots (104 km / h), their pole position was thrilled later by Australian Paul Larsen aboard his Vestas SailRocket.

At such a speed, instinct alone is not enough. The crew of the Hydrofoil is assisted by an arsenal of electronic devices that measure every reaction of the boat. The democratization of this type of machine is not for now, even with the marketing of smaller models, such as the Flying Phantom One of Martin Fischer. After a hundred years of research, performance competition continues. The engineers of the future will win new challenges. , We await the day when the Hydrofoil will tour the world above the waves.

The traditional trophy Multi50 Prince de Bretagne - Côtes d'Armor prepares to resume his summer quarters off the coast of Saint-Quay-Portrieux. From 22 to 24 next August, the sides of Goelo will once again vibrate to the rhythm of regattas between multihulls. Eleven Multi50 promise to ensure the show.

A fleet of 11 multihulls
On the field of play, a team of eleven trimarans has already answered the call to cross the bows one last time before joining, November 02, the starting line of the Route du Rhum. Gauge the competition, to sharpen, validate the material, and, why not, score psychological points: the objectives are many for teams to the ranks of this 6th edition of the Prince de Bretagne - Côtes d'Armor trophy.

Land, two surprises of size register in the menu of the 2014 edition: the feast of coco from Paimpol on Sunday, and the visit of Executive Chef Jean Imbert ship Ambassador, Maxi80 Prince of Brittany, still faithful to the position and place for Public Relations.

Jean Imbert, invited mark aboard Maxi80 Prince de Bretagne
To share the limelight with the Coco de Paimpol, this 6th edition of the trophy Prince de Bretagne will also rely on the visit of the Chief Jean Imbert. Native of Erquy, not far from Cape Fréhel where he has never missed the start of the Route du Rhum, the famous chef costarmoricain do not declined the invitation which was made to embark aboard the trimaran Prince de Bretagne, which he is the godfather.
