Dick Newick, multihull design pioneer across the bar

Multihull designer and luminary Dick Newick has passed away.  Dick brought a special flair to multihulls with his seaworthy craft and their organic forms and graceful design.  A cheerful smile and a strong intellect rounded out an individual with a special gift.  Just a few of Dick's better known designs are the "Atlantic" proa Cheers and the trimarans Moxie, Rogue Wave, Third Turtle and Ocean Surfer.  He was active till the end and attended the Golden Oldies Trophy event in May along with Marc Van Petegham, James Wharram and Hanneke Boon.

America's Cup update, Sail Racing Magazine on the Emirates Team New Zealand winning the Louis Vuitton Cup and progressing to confront Oracle Team USA for the America's Cup

From the following article on the Sail Racing Magazine website:

Fog and light winds no deterrent as ETNZ close out Louis Vuitton Cup series.

Thick fog across most of the race course and the lightest flukiest winds so far in the competition did not slow down the Kiwi crew on the Emirates Team New Zealand AC72 today as they dismissed the Italian Luna Rossa syndicate with a massive win in the eighth race of the Louis Vuitton Cup Final.

If anything, the margin of advantage for the Kiwis was even greater in the 12-14 knot conditions which prevailed for most of the race. Both teams flew gennakers on the first downwind leg and ETNZ immediately began to pull away, sailing three to four knots better VMG angles than Luna Rossa. Upwind too they didn't put a foot wrong and by the time they turned at the top mark for the last time they were more than three minutes ahead.

Dean Barker's boys turned on the style on the final reach to the finish, tearing across the finish line at 40 knots to the obvious delight of the crowds of spectators at the Pier 27 America's Cup Race Village.

America's Cup update, Pete Melvin of Morelli and Melvin on his involvement in the Emirates Team New Zealand AC72 catamaran program

From the following article in the New Zealand Herald by Paul Lewis

http://www.nzherald.co.nz/sport/news/article.cfm?c_id=4&objectid=11113513

If Team New Zealand manage to bring the America's Cup back to Auckland, one of the little-known heroes will be an American and a former Oracle team member.

It's not overstating matters to suggest that designer Pete Melvin is the father of the AC72s, the blisteringly fast catamarans of the 34th America's Cup.

Even more surprisingly, Melvin - a sailing coach for Oracle racing before becoming a multi-hull design guru - is the man who played a major role in designing the wingsail for the giant 90ft trimaran, known as BOR 90; the yacht which won the Cup for Oracle in 2010 in a deed of gift showdown against Alinghi's giant catamaran.

- Swapping the tide for turf – Extreme 40 skippers rub shoulders with British and Irish Lions heroes Leigh Halfpenny and Alex Cuthbert.
- Big breeze on the horizon for tomorrow – tune in LIVE from 1600 BST on the official website. Watch the preview here.

Quashing all fears of a shut down in Cardiff Bay on the opening day of the Extreme Sailing Series™ Act 6, Cardiff hosted by the Cardiff Harbour festival, the light airs that looked set to characterise the day's racing revved up to a playful breeze across the bay just in time for three all important points scoring races – perhaps spurred on by a wind dance from Red Bull Sailing Teams trimmer Matthew Adams. Out on the course the Swiss dominated, with 2013 newcomers Realteam leading the Act after day one and circuit veterans Alinghi exercising their new weapon and Olympic champion Anna Tunnicliffe, putting them in second. Never far from the podium top spot, Leigh McMillan’s The Wave, Muscat wait in the wings in third as day one of racing concludes. To wrap up the opening days proceedings, the Extreme Sailing Series skippers tonight joined British and Irish lions heroes and two of international rugby’s best-known stars, Leigh halfpenny and Alex Cuthbert at the Cardiff Blues home ground to see for themselves what the Welsh do best.

Sail Racing Magazine talk to Glenn Ashby wing trimmer about the nosedive in Race 2 of the Louis Vuitton Cup

From the following entry on the excellent Sail Racing Magazine

http://www.sailracingmagazine.com/editors-blog/glenn-ashby-explains-the-emirates-team-new-zealand-nosedive

The most heart stopping moment of the 34th America's Cup action so far was the huge bear way crash which saw the Emirates Team New Zealand AC72 nosedive at the windward mark race two. (In case you have been living up a mountain with no internet or left the planet temporarily in the last few days the video clip is at the end of this article).

So what exactly went wrong on the Kiwi boat to trigger such a spectacular nose dive that it thew the majority of the crew into a tangled heap and flicked two of them unceremoniously into San Francisco Bay.

To find out from one who would know for sure, we got Emirates Team New Zealand wing trimmer Glenn Ashby to talk us through it.

First we asked Glenn to explain what he is doing to the massive wing sail when the boat goes around the windward mark.

"We had great wind conditions today," says Daniel Schmäh, skipper of the Hydrofoil. C. "The wind held the top lake, which is quite rare and has been lacking in recent attempts. We broke a rudder on the back, but have decided to continue because we were in a good timing. We have learned from many banks saw the wind direction, which is the more extended distance. "

America's Cup update, Emirates Team New Zealand gets first point in the Louis Vuitton Cup but not without drama

From the following article on americascup.com submitted by Sean McNeill

http://www.americascup.com/en/news/3/news/17349/emirates-team-new-zealand-survives-nosedive-wins-first-race-of-louis-vuitton-cup-final

The 30th anniversary Louis Vuitton Cup Final got off to a boisterous start today with Emirates Team New Zealand opening a 1-0 lead over Luna Rossa Challenge.

On a windy day on San Francisco Bay, Emirates Team New Zealand and Luna Rossa both wrestled with equipment problems, each suffered in different fashion. The difference was that Luna Rossa’s problem inhibited the crew’s ability to race, while the Kiwis’ problem scared the living daylights out of them.

Luna Rossa had a daggerboard problem before the race that ultimately scuttled the crew’s race after the first mark rounding. The team had refined the daggerboard and its lifting post last week.

America's Cup World series update, Measurement committee report on Team Oracle USA and BAR AC45 catamaran weight discrepancies

From the following article submitted to Sail-World by Richard Gladwell:

http://www.sail-world.com/Australia/Gladwells-Line:-Measurement-Committee-clarifies-report-to-Jury/113305

The often bizarre world of the America's Cup took a new twist today with the release of two new reports form the International Jury.

In fact, only one of the reports was new - that of a clarification from the Chairman of the Measurement Committee - on some points made earlier in his report to the International Jury concerning the taking out of class of three AC45 catamarans managed by Oracle Team USA.

The situation was discovered by boatbuilders from America's Cup Management, when they were assembling and equalising the AC45's to be used for the Red Bull Youth America's Cup Series.

Initially the report from the Chief Measurer has it that three forward kingposts (supporting struts under the mast and sprit of the AC45's) were found to be overweight, and had weight added to them by Oracle Team USA.

Airlie Beach Race Week 2013, Final results for multihulls in Divisions 1,2,3 and PHS

The multihull extract from the following article on the Airlie Beach Race Week website:

http://www.airlieraceweek.com/sailing/news/2013/more-breeze-and-new-winners-on-final-day

Multihulls

In the 2013 Australian National Multihull Championship the top place getters in each division were in OMR Division 1, Chris Williams’s Morticia with a clean sweep of six races.
OMR Division 2 was won by Andrew Stransky and his family on Fantasia who finished on six points.

In OMR Division 3, it was a very close contest with Tony Richardson’s Pocahontas coming out in front with 10 points, just on ahead of Mike Willcocks’s Hot Option.
The PHS Multihull Division won by Clare and Wayne Kirby’s Clear Horizons.

Multihull national measurer, Mike Hodges, reported the OMR Division 1 winner, the Sea Cart 30 Morticia, blitzed every race. “I know during the week that some of the guys have been on the internet looking to see if they can buy one.
“The boat did the Brisbane to Gladstone race this year and everybody was expecting big things of it, but it didn’t perform. But at the same time the guys hadn’t had it very long and they didn’t have any experience of it. That’s six months ago. Since then they have sailed it regularly, tuned it up and optimised it to the OMR rule and now they have a boat that is an absolute master blaster.
“Everybody seems perfectly happy with the location for the nationals. It’s a great place to have a national championships. I would be surprised if the Australian multihull championships don’t come back to Airlie Beach within the next two to three years,” Hodges said.

The final results below for OMR Division 1,2,3 and PHS below:

Emirates Team New Zealand meets old rival Luna Rossa in a best of 13 match – the team to win seven races first will win the cup.

Luna Rossa has had more race preparation, having beaten Artemis a 4-0 in the semi-finals round last weekend. Dean Barker and crew have not raced since the end of the round robin which gave them a ticket straight to final.

The New Zealand boat has been in the shed for modifications and the team  has not sailed a great deal, although recent practice sessions have been very pleasing to skipper Dean Barker

RBYAC: “We still pinch ourselves to realize that this is happening”

Published on August 15th, 2013 | by Editor (Sailing Scuttlebutt)

San Francisco, CA (August 15, 2013) – This week marks the final phase of the American Youth Sailing Force’s eighteen month campaign to win the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup (RBYAC).
The Force is sailing their newly commissioned AC45 catamaran in the official training sessions taking place from August 12 to August 28. They are sparring with nine other Youth teams who are vying to win the RBYAC that takes place Sept. 1 to 4 on San Francisco’s City Front.

America's Cup update, Dean Barker of Emirates Team New Zealand on the teams progress with their AC72 catamaran

From the following article on the excellent Sail Racing World magazine:

Dean Barker: Huge performance gains still on the table but upwind foiling unlikely to be one of them.

Spend even a little time watching the three teams left in the 34th America's Cup and right now and it's easy to forget just how difficult these boats actually are. Long gone are the stumbling baby steps we saw all the syndicates making as they tried to master their 72 feet flying catamarans. Now, dare I say it, they almost make it look easy.

Emirates Team New Zealand look the slickest of any of the crews and according to their helmsman Dean Barker the apparent effortless ease with which they tear around the bay has come from practising their manoeuvres over and over and over again.

"It's not by chance that you and the crew improve and you can sail the boat at a much higher level," Barker told me. "Through repetition of manoeuvres and everything else you build up your confidence in your ability to perform them."

The Louis Vuitton Final race schedule pitches the Kiwis against Luna Rossa twice each race day and ETNZ have been putting in some long days on the water recently, primarily Barker said to practise switching gears from the lighter morning winds to the stronger afternoon breezes.

Airlie Beach Race Week (2013) update, Chris Williams Seacart 30 Morticia unbeatable on points in OMR division 1

This multihull extract from the following article on ABRW website:

http://www.airlieraceweek.com/sailing/news/2013/tough-day-sailing-office-division-leader

Multihulls

In OMR Division 1, Morticia’s Chris Williams called the race “painful”, but who is he to complain when his team had just won their fifth straight race.  They sailed the Sea Cart 30 beautifully through the glass-outs and the soft offshore northerly, sailing through the monohulls and well ahead of Mal Richardson’s Malice and George Owen’s APC Mad Max.

Overall this places Morticia in an unbeatable top position with five points. The battle tomorrow will then be between Jason Gard’s Spirit and Robert Remilton’s Wilparnia II, as long as both sail well the Pioneer Bay course.

In OMR Division 2, handicap honours went again to Philip Day’s Rhythmic. The division is still being led by Andrew Stransky’s Fantasia on eight points, then Rhythmic on 10 points with Rupert King’s Overdrive on 18 points.

OMR Division 3 was won today by Gary Scott’s Coco Loco. The overall lead is with Mike Willcocks’s Hot Option on 11 points, followed by Tony Richardson’s Pocahontas on 15 points and Geoff Floyd’s Fifty Fifty on 16 points.

All these three divisions will be able to discard their worst result after tomorrow’s race.
In the PHS Multihull Division, the overall lead is still held by Clare and Wayne Kirby’s Clear Horizons.
