Solo sailor Florence Arthaud killed in tragic helicopter accident
Florence Arthaud has been killed in a helicopter accident during the filming of a TV show. Perhaps most famous for her solo victory in the 1990 Route du Rhum on the ORMA60 trimaran "Pierre 1er" she continued her career in sailing well after that point also taking a Transpac win along with Bruno Peyron on the 86' catamaran "Explorer". A true inspiration to solo sailors worldwide we extend our sincere condolences to her family and friends. Fair winds and following seas Florence.

Neel 65 cruising trimaran structurally complete moving on to fitout
The first Neel 65 trimaran shell is complete and is moving on to the fitout stage. This is the largest production cruising trimaran ever built.

Yvan Bourgnon secures crowd funding to continue beach cat circumnavigation attempt
Yvan Bourgnon has managed to secure sufficient crowd funding to continue on his beach cat circumnavigation. He is going to rebuild the remains of his wrecked boat in Sri Lanka and continue on to France to complete his journey.

Racing proa design 'Bucket list' by Rob Denney

Bucket List has a fuse on the main sheet cleat which releases at 30 degrees of pitch or heel. If it does capsize, the buoyant mast stops it going past 90° from where the buoyant boom will right it without the crew getting wet.
The rudders kick up in a collision or grounding and are easily lifted, resulting in a 100mm draft with nothing to trip over on a breaking wave, and the ability to surf up the beach and step ashore as a last resort.
Large, easily replaced foam/glass buffers on the hull ends minimise collision damage.
The single sail rig means you never have to venture outside the beams. There is no dangerous foredeck work, and none of the dramas associated with extras. The wishbone boom is above head height if you are on the tramp.
The hulls are foam cored and compartmentalised. Even if it was severely holed, Bucket List would still float and could still sail.
The flexible mast automatically dumps power in an unexpected gust. The absence of stays means the sail can be reefed, raised, lowered or totally eased on any point of sail and any wind strength.

Windrider has just Signed a deal with Astus Boats to sell their trimarans in the United States. The online version of the marine industry magazine, “Trade Only Today,” posted this news a few days ago (on August 27th).
That’s pretty neat. I’ve periodically wondered when (if) somebody would become an Astus dealer here in the US. The Astus trimarans are featured in the book, “More Small Trimarans.” You can also find out more about them at the website of one of their European dealers here.

Yvan Bourgnon loses his catamaran on rocks in Sri Lanka while attempting to reach the shore during his beach cat circumnavigation attempt
Yvan Bourgnon's catamaran on which he has nearly completely circumnavigated has sadly been lost on the rocks in Sri Lanka. Yvan has thankfully survived without injury but the boat is a complete write off. His plan is to head back to France and attempt to raise funding for another catamaran built along the same principle of no accommodation and short LOA to complete his adventure.

Multihull heavy weather tactics when sailing a catamaran offshore

By their nature, larger catamarans are exceptionally safe offshore. It is not unusual to sail through mildly uncomfortable conditions, such as a gale, only to arrive in port and hear sailors on keelboats talk of “surviving” horrendous weather. A large modern catamaran has plenty of buoyancy and exceptional roll inertia. Together these make a capsize, or inversion, highly unlikely. A 30-foot breaking wave hitting a cat abeam will simply make the boat surf sideways.
On most offshore passages, advanced communications and weather information should preclude you from ever experiencing true gale or survival conditions. The highest risks are run on passages sailed on a north-south axis between seasons. Early spring or late autumn passages between New England and the Caribbean, in eastern Atlantic waters off Europe, or on routes between the South Pacific and New Zealand are where you typically have a chance of experiencing a good wallop offshore. Follow the wisdom outlined in Jimmy Cornell’s World Cruising Routes, and these risks should be minimized. Regardless, anyone venturing offshore in a multihull should be prepared to handle the worst.

Catri 25 trimaran prototype launched

Now, one and a half year after the commencement
of work in the new shipyard, the first CATRI model who really “designed to fly”
launched in Burtnieki lake. In contrast to the AC34 catamarans and their small
versions (Flying Phantom, Nacra F20C, GC32), the Catri 25 foiling height will
not exceed 5-8 cm. Hulls’ contact with tops of waves increases resistance
slightly, but it completely offsets by achieved stability. As a result, the new
foiling trimaran designed as an all purpose sport cruiser for both race and
family cruising.
