Prince de Bretagne Maxi 80 relaunched after various upgrades the installation of a new central rudder and repairs to the mast canting system

From the following article on the Prince de Bretagne website:

http://www.princedebretagne-mer.com/actualites/324-le-maxi-80-prince-de-bretagne-remis-a-leau

And the rough bing translate below:

After a little more than two months of construction during which Lionel Lemonchois team including repaired the mast tilt system and changed to the central hull, Maxi 80 Prince de Bretagne saffron found his element yesterday in Lorient, before be lying in the aftermath.

"All went perfectly well." Wednesday morning, we delivered sails in place, and by the end of the week, we reconnecterons everything that needs to be, and then we will install the three rudders. In addition, we have a big job of implementing a new simple video system of use which will allow Lionel to optimize his time when it will be at sea " said Arnaud Aubry, the right arm of the Norman skipper, recalling that, in this sense, a second antenna Fleet has recently been installed on the trimaran." Normally, we should attack the first outings at sea as early as next Tuesday. The first five or six navigations will be carried out with a reduced crew. Then, Lionel will lead solo. Rest that Prince de Bretagne is already in configuration 'solitaire' and that even when we are many on board, we décomposerons the manoeuvres as would a man only to ensure everything is working properly before going into 'record' mode 'added Arnaud.

Prince de Bretagne Maxi 80 trimaran, relaunched with canting rig prior to the Fastnet Race

The Prince de Bretagne Maxi 80 trimaran has been relaunched after a round of modifications the most notable of which is a canting rig system.  The modifications will be tested out in the upcoming Fastnet Race.

From the following article on the Prince de Bretagne Maxi 80 website (In French):

http://www.princedebretagne-mer.com/...ous-au-fastnet

I've tidied up the bing translate a bit to make it more legible:

"Test, measure, to calibrate..."

Skipper Lionel Lemanchois noted "It will be very interesting to race (Fastnet Race) with Banque Populaire VII, to see how Prince de Bretagne is positioned in speed relative to this large trimaran." This race will also measure the speed gain allowed by the canting mast, especially against the MOD 70, competitors that we know well after the Route des Princes. It is the perfect race to to calibrate", explains her skipper. "Wednesday, we sailed and we canted the mast in all directions in 20 knots of wind about. Everything has to operate impeccably! The boat is lighter at the helm, it luffs (comes back to the wind) more easily," he added, reinforced by the first navigation test in the wake of the modifications with the installation of the system of ropes and hoists to cant the rig.

Prince de Bretagne Maxi trimaran, relaunched and ready for Fastnet Race

The Prince de Bretagne team have relaunched the Maxi 80 trimaran.  The recent round of modifications focused on the installation of a canting mast system.  This system works on lines and purchases rather than the more common hydraulic systems used on other maxi trimarans.  The main driver is weight by using the string driven system considerable weight savings can be realized over a hydraulic setup.

A recent article goes into some detail (in French).

Prince de Bretagne maxi hauled out and in shed receiving modifications for canting rig

Lionel Lemonchois and the Prince de Bretagne team are implementing the canting rig as quickly as possible in order to provide shake down and training time prior to the RORC Fastnet Race.

From the following article on the Prince de Bretagne website:

http://www.princedebretagne-mer.com/actualites/300-derniere-semaine-de-chantier

Here is the rough bing translate

Entering the shelter on the return from the Route des Princes, and the shadow of the hangar at the base of Lorient at the beginning of the month of July, the Maxi80 Prince of Brittany knows his last days of summer starts. True to his habit, Lionel Lemonchois is working with a small team to optimize its oceanic courier with the objective of quickly to find water. As soon as next Thursday, the trimaran red and grey will be rearmed, remâté, and equipped with a tilting rig, pledge of immediate performance gain.

The Princes Highway proved to be instructive, and Lionel Lemonchois was quick to take advantage to engage a major project in record time. Indeed, many saltwater sank under the floats of the maxi-multihull since the first navigation in Lorient bay at the beginning of the month of January. After the first races of spring, and in in wake of the 2 500 miles covered along the coasts in Princes road, the development time has come for team Prince of Brittany, who is currently working for the courier ocean of a pole whose inclination can be adjusted depending on the degree of heel.

"This is a small feature, which will allow him to gain a few precious knots resembling closely." Being able to toggle the mast, this allows to take advantage of the surface of sails when the vessel begins to exit the central hull of the water. Lionel may, in crew as in solitaire, adjust the mast towards the optimum heel", explains Quentin Lucet, a naval architect with VPLP (Lauriot Prévost - Van Peteghem).

"If during its design, this"tilting mast option"was not accepted, it is that we wanted to focus the length in accordance with the specifications of weight", pursues one that is currently working closely with Lionel Jacques Roudot, the head of construction, and Bambino, responsible for the rigging of the boat. "ll was important to validate the design of the boat, and to see with regard to its first sporting confrontations what changes could be made to it. This tilting mast, it is in the logic of things, this is an option that had been considered very early in terms of optimization. It is a true guarantee of performance, especially in the light airs, and the priority objective of this summer yard."

Featuring a well optimized rig, and after a great first overhaul, Prince de Bretagne out of the shipyard Thursday, July 25. Lionel Lemonchois and his team will then conduct navigations of training for the next Fastnet Race, the start will be given on August 11, next to the coast of Cowes.

Prince de Bretagne Maxi update, modifications planned

The Prince de Bretagne team are planning some modifications to the Prince de Bretagne Maxi.  The plan is to implement a canting mast to allow a straightforward boost in performance.

The original article (in French) is here:

http://www.princedebretagne-mer.com/actualites/299-chantier-d-ete-et-mat-basculant-pour-le-maxi80-prince-de-Bretagne

and the rough Bing translate:

A few days after a finish the Route des Princes who did honour, in Bay of Morlaix, producers and the ties that bind them to the world of the sea, the Maxi80 Prince of Britain has joined its base in Lorient. Soon dismasted and disarmed, it is in the shadow of the construction that the trimaran red and grey debuted the summer. More than a great overhaul, Lionel Lemonchois and his men are now working to equip the maxi multihull with a system allowing to switch the mast, with the objective of quickly gain in performance, and to assert its power.
Four steps for approximately 450 miles (4 538 miles) travelled to the rhythm of five stops of Valencia in the Bay of Morlaix, the first edition of the Route of the Princes has proved very beneficial for all the team Prince de Bretagne. During these three weeks of race instructive, Lionel Lemonchois and his crew largely benefited from the intense competition played against the monotypes trimarans (MOD 70) to try out their prototype, the only ultimate on the ranks to the highest sporting level.

More power, more confidence

Ideal to enjoy, backdrop measure and analyze more closely the development potential offered by the latest Ocean multihull. "This Route of the Princes, it was that the bonus. Technically, we draw many lessons. First the boat is reliable, we did encounter a structural concern. Since the ferry between Lorient and Valencia, it is very clear we have much gained in speed. Near of course, two knots about as it noted Matthew (Souben), but it is also true under all points of sail. We have learned to use the boat", detailed Lionel Lemonchois. And add: "on this platform genre, in the beginning, there is always a little trouble border fort, while we should! This race, which has allowed to climb to power, also made us many gain confidence. We were able to validate many things, the deck including, plan even if it remains full of prospects to explore. This type of boat, it is a permanent laboratory! "

Mission immediate performance
Serene after this first full-scale test along the European coasts, satisfied to have finished on a high note in the Bay of Morlaix - before the bows of the MOD 70 after three weeks hanging from their rear tables! -It is with conviction that Lionel Lemonchois therefore approach the new construction programmed for the Maxi80: 'it is some time now that I think about the need to make the tilting mast. The three weeks of racing against the MOD, equipped with this type of rigging, have enabled us to properly gauge this is a solution to adopt, and us have confirmed this choice. Being able to tilt the mast in the wind - which allows to the close to relieve the platform and less boat sinking - it is a true guarantee of immediate performance gain. Including Act!" He explains.

Top departure site
For Lionel and his team, after three weeks of every moment between Mediterranean Regatta and the Bay of Morlaix, it's a new race that starts. For this run of a month about side construction speed, Lionel can count on a small guard close very invested in the development of the boat. Jacques Roudot immediately resumed service to play the role of interface between the team and external stakeholders. Among them, Quentin Lucet firm of naval architects Van Peteghem-Lauriot Prévost, and the engineers at Hervé Devaux Structures - who worked on the installation of the mast salvaged from the former 60 feet on its new 80-foot platform - load more specifically to the spar. Bambino (François Denis), navigating to the position of number one, and permanent in charge of the rig, is of course the part about this "swinging pole" mission, prior to the release of Prince of Brittany, thus optimized, early August.

Appointment to the Fastnet
Appointment is indeed already taken for the inevitable, and the legendary Fastnet Race, which mobilizes this year, departing from Cowes on August 11, a prestigious plateau of 380 boats to do battle on the 605 miles of the route to Plymouth via the legendary rock of the Celtic Sea. Among maxi multihull expected, Prince de Bretagne will be very keen to shoot the first fruits of his freshly mast tilting at this biennale and great classic of the offshore racing.

Voiles et Voiliers interview with Lionel Lemanchois and Vincent Laurent Prevost on the new Prince de Bretagne Maxi and it's competition in the 2014 Route du Rhum

Voiles et Voiliers have published an excellent interview with Lionel Lemanchois and Laurent Prevost of VPLP. It discusses the new Prince de Bretagne Maxi 80 and the other Ultime multihull competitors for the 2014 Route du Rhum.

The original article (in French) is here for our French readers:

http://www.voilesetvoiliers.com/course-regate/rhum-2014-ultime-interviews-lauriot-prevost-lionel-lemonchois-prince-de-bretagne/

and the rough bing translation below

While Prince de Bretagne is baptized this weekend in Roscoff, Lionel Lemonchois gives his first impressions on this 80-foot trimaran made from the platform of the ORMA Sodebo60. Architect Vincent Lauriot-Prévost completes its analyses, as Bank Populaire VII (ex-Groupama 3) comes to his first outing and Thomas Coville transformed ex-Geronimo. All of these ultimate multihulls have only one major objective: the Route du Rhum 2014!

Lionel, back first on the concept of Prince de Bretagne...Two years ago, you decided to change a 60 foot ORMA, but not with the same approach as Gitana 11 in 2010.
L.L. : The choice was related primarily to the financial means available to my partner. The idea was from an ORMA trimaran redeemed not too expensive, to make a large boat capable of winning the Route du Rhum 2014. It would have probably been better from a blank sheet to design a multihull specially adapted for this race, but the budget was not at all the same!

Lionel Lemonchois et Vincent Lauriot-PrévostBefore the 80-foot Prince de Bretagne, Lionel Lemonchois and Vincent Lauriot-Prévost plan new optimizations before the Route du Rhum 2014.Photo @ Dominic Bourgeois The last Route du Rhum, there already was Groupama 3 (now Bank Populaire VII), Sodebo, Idec and Gitana 11Well, it imagined that they would be back at the start in Saint-Malo in 2014...
L.L. : IIL had to play in harmony with the financial means available to me. Groupama 3 was too expensive, a new boat also. We have found a solution that satisfies everyone, from a technical, budgetary, athletic perspective with the objective of a boat that will quickly, easily. I turned logically to the vplp which is a reference in the multihull. Then it took to choose the most appropriate for these transformations ORMA trimaran.

Vincent Lauriot-Prévost, why the ex -Sodebo ?
V.L.P. :C' was the broadest of the fleet (18.20 meters), which was an important parameter for the length-to-width ratio is coherent and efficient. Groupama 2, for example, was too fickle, less wide (17 metres) and especially too light (6 tonnes) to support additional power without going through the box reinforcements. The ex-Sodebo was heavy enough and structured to avoid having to review all the structure since the principle was to significantly increase the power. We had an appropriation of weight that allowed us to design a pretty close final weight of the original Prince de Bretagne .

Compared to Gitana 11 which was also boosted in 2010, what does it change?
V.L.P. : To change the three shells made out the arm, to change the roots of mast and wells of drift. So to find a balance by positioning the arm where it was needed, a contrario of Gitana 11, whose only floats have been changed and extended central hull. If we had imagined a new boat, we would have been on the same width. And with a distribution of volumes of fairly similar float. The ex-Sodebo was a trimaran, which lent itself perfectly to these transformations.
L.L. :With 7 knots of wind, Prince de Bretagne throws the paw! The behavior is pretty close to an ORMA trimaran with 20 feet long and more... The boat is harmonious, and if we had a boat nine, only the mast would have earned two meters in height. Originally, the ship weighed 6.9 tons, and in its current version, it made 7.3 tons!

And in terms of wing, one remains in the same values?
L.L. : It's the same rig, but we were able to increase the surface area of the Genoese and the gennakers because the length of central hull went 80 feet (24 meters): tack points were therefore able to be advanced. The surface of GV is identical, the Genoa is slightly larger and maxi gennaker won quite a lot of square meters. To be the lightest possible, we removed the mainsail hydraulics: the weight of cylinders and others turned into length of shell.

Caractéristiques de trimarans VPLP Rhum 2014The new Prince de Bretagne is very similar to Gitana 11 but with a higher although righting moment two times less important than that of Groupama 3. But the last winner of the Route du Rhum is proportionately much less canvas. The confrontation with the MOD70 promises to be thrilling in the medium... Note that the features of the new Sodebo (ex-Geronimo) are not yet announced.Document @ VPLP Is the behaviour of Prince de Bretagne satisfactory compared to Gitana 11?
L.L. : I've never sailed on Gitana 11 boosted! (Lionel Lemonchois had curtly thanked after won the Route du Rhum 2006 and cumulative records with the giant cata Gitana 13, ED) . But the feedback I had confirmed that his behaviour was very close to an ORMA, very fickle. We have gained in security, especially in longitudinal with six meters more. It does not fear when felled! Prince de Bretagne accelerates and pitch not up as much as Gitana 11.
V.L.P. : On Gitana 11, we left on forms of very powerful floats which sank very little - this also contributed to make fickle, especially because he tends to be soft. On Prince de Bretagne, forms are similar to those of a MOD70 and the boat is slightly burning, allowing positively transform a laughing stock under acceleration without having to push the bar.
L.L. :The balance is excellent because with the new drift to trimmer, the boat is either neutral or slightly burning. In the almost singlehanded under driver, a boat that has a tendency to climb into the wind is healthier and downwind, a boat that restarts itself, it is more efficient!

Since the water in October 2012, how many outputs at sea?
L.L. : We started to navigate in January and is cumulated more than 20 days at sea. Lack us still exits in heavy weather, but on rise in power. For the moment, the boat corresponds perfectly to what I imagined: very healthy, very pleasant, quick and easy to carry. There are still a few small improvements possible, like the change of the central rudder, currently on the transom and we could develop further, suspended under the hull. There are some files that I preferred set up after sailing: the Route du Rhum is in over a year!

Banque Populaire VII : première sortieApril 18, 2013: first exit for Bank Populaire VII (ex-Groupama 3) and Armel le Cléac 'h. The boat has already aligned off the coast of Belle-île, more than 35 knots in around twenty knots of wind...Photo @ Yvan Zedda Sea & Co

The fact of having achieved Prince de Bretagne has apparently created vocations for the next Route du Rhum, precisely. Theoretically, who will win?
V.L.P. : Banque Populaire VII (ex -Groupama 3) has so far not changed. Armel Le Cléac ' h is in the getting started phase and the boat had already well adapted to the solitaire for Franck Cammas. It measures 100 feet (30,50 m) with a four-metre mast above: it has a power of 160 m.t. while Prince de Bretagne is approximately 70 m.t.. But these boats there single-handed sail not 100% of their potential. Bank Pop VII has more reserve, but one can imagine that it will be often led to 70%, while Prince de Bretagne will instead to 85%. Armel is not going to be able to afford to change sail too often and gybes are difficult and long. But his boat has more inertia in the seas and more security reserve in grain... Theoretically, Lionel will be more comfortable to fit a diverse weather. In fact, the two boats are likely not to follow the same path on the Route du Rhum! Bank Populaire VII should favour a route with the least possible manoeuvres, much like in 2010. with Franck Cammas - but, for the next edition, which can predict that there will not be three depressions to negotiate out of the channel? It is therefore impossible to know how much it must degrade the speed of one and the other vessel polar and which will be the first in Pointe-à-Pitre...
L.L. : On Bank Populaire VII, it will be hard to be in the good 'range' of sailing at all times. If the weather is fickle, I would have easier to adapt. We know that the first coming out of the train of depressions to touch the trade winds escapes... Remains to be seen if this will unfold as in 2010 or as in 2006! I believe that the key is to feel good about his boat, with confidence, not to be exceeded. The Route du Rhum is a lonely race! I do not at all feel frustrated not navigate on the ex -Groupama 3.

And from the two planes Nigel Irens/Benoît Cabaret, Sodebo and Idec ?
L.L. : I'm less worried... It will also depend on the weather, but the Route du Rhum, is not that of about in the breeze.
V.L.P. : I think that Prince de Bretagne is faster, not all the time, especially to the close, but on the whole route, Yes.

Comparatif Prince de Bretagne, Gitana 11, Groupama 3The new Prince de Bretagne (left) is positioned as an intermediate trimaran Gitana 11 (in the centre) and the ex-Groupama 3 (right). Without claiming to be the same potential in the breeze as the previous winner of the Route du Rhum 2010, Lionel Lemonchois mult will be more reactive than the ex-Groupama and easier to handle than Gitana...Document @ VPLP

And ex-Geronimo as Thomas Coville is transforming, it will be nearest Bank Populaire VII or Prince de Bretagne ?
V.L.P. : Clearly, the target from a big heavy boat (105 feet and 20 tons), was closer to the Groupama 3 (17 tonnes) concept. The new Sodebo should get closer the weight of Bank Populaire VII... And there is little difference in width between these two ships: 20 meters for the ex -Geronimo 21.20 metres for the ex -Groupama 3.

By changing the central hull and mast, but also the floats? Or by cutting the lower hull to have shapes similar to the ex -Groupama 3 ?
V.L.P. : A new central hull allows, as on Prince de Bretagne, change mat and wells of derivative roots, and choose suitable sail plan. In the end, the characteristics of the new Sodebo and Bank Populaire VII will be very close, with a power, a wing and a similar weight - they will have the same strengths and weak points that Prince de Bretagne... As to changes outside the central hull and rigging, it will depend on the budget of Thomas and his program over several years. The first deadline, is to be ready in Saint-Malo, which short still to transform all of a sudden.
L.L. : This comes very quickly, I know something! For our part, after the baptism in Roscoff Saturday, we go down to Trinidad for the Tour de Belle-Ile (4 May) and we put with great price Lesley in Douarnenez (5-6 May). This will be an opportunity to compete with Bank Populaire VII ! Then we go down to Valencia for the Route of the Princes (9-30 June). We are five for the tour of Europe with Mathieu Souben, Fred Le Peutrec, Jean-Luc Nélias and Alex Pela. We will be the only ultimate multihull but we will have the reference of the MOD70: in the little time at the close with their large gennaker, they are very fast!

And what about the 50-foot Prince de Bretagne?
L.L. : Gilles Lamiré is currently redeem him: it should take possession next week with its own partners (the Saint-Malo agglomération) to align with the Princes road.

Prince de Bretagne Maxi 80, out of the water for a round of minor modifications

The Prince de Bretagne team have lifted out the Maxi 80 trimaran to make some modifications.  The main focus apparently is the installation of a new daggerboard.  There will also be some tweaks integrated from Lionel Lemanchois's observations on sailing the boat in it's sea trials.

the original article (in French) is here:

 http://www.princedebretagne-mer.com/actualites/252-chantier-express-pour-maxi-80-presse

and the rough Google Translate below:

As expected for a long time, the Prince de Bretagne team released the Maxi80 water to return to the site. At 9 am on Thursday, the crane already in position, the maneuvers could begin prior to the dismasted boat lift to go to the garage. The program for this update dry: a check-up after the first few months of browsing, odds and minor changes or installing a larger drift (daggerboard?) ...This is not a beach catamaran for all operations to remove the trimaran 24.30 meters of water and go home, warm and dry in the premises of the team were conducted smoothly. "Here, we're at home, the boat dock is just across the yard and offices, and it is true that it makes this kind of operation quite easy," says Lionel.

"Performance Objective"

"This is his first time to dry for six months. Were few niceties to above, and small changes to the mast, he adds. We will also install a larger drift, which also recovered the old platform 60 feet. This was prepared in recent weeks. It will replace the more typical for the first wide by this greater drift (daggerboard) with a trim tab (small movable flap), which should enable us to
gain in light airs and close on the next race formats such as Route des Princes which takes place in several stages crew.'' The goal is clearly the performance. "

"A boat that was"

Within ten days, Prince de Bretagne find his element. First, there is the baptism in Roscoff in late April 27 and early May, the time comes the first races: the Tour de Belle Ile and ArMen Race from La Trinité-sur-Mer Grand Prix Guyader Douarnenez, and finally the Princes Highway, which will take the crew Maxi80, for three weeks from June 7, take a tour of Europe in Valencia in the Bay of Morlaix, via Lisbon, Dublin and Plymouth."It will be an Express project, and it is true that we can not wait to rub competition. Currently, we are all quite happy, you do not encounter major problems of structure, the boat well born and go fast air, and this is what we wanted! So far so good, even if it means we get to confront other boats for references " concludes his skipper, obviously in a hurry to go to the site ... For as quickly back into the water ...
