“It’s amazing. It’s exciting. It’s wet, fast and fun.” That’s how Will Tiller, the skipper of Full Metal Jacket described sailing the AC45 wing-sail catamaran but he could very well have been talking about the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup itself.
The new competition for national teams of youth sailors aged 19-24 provided thrills, spills and plenty of action over four days of intense racing on San Francisco Bay. The New Zealand Sailing Team with Emirates Team New Zealand had a strong closing day to beat their fierce rivals on Full Metal Jacket (NZL) and the ROFF/Cascais Sailing Team from Portugal to win the inaugural title.
“It’s been amazing to actually take the win,” said Peter Burling, the skipper of the New Zealand Sailing Team. “We got a lot better during the racing. It’s amazing to take the win and quite humbling to do it under the Emirates Team New Zealand banner.”
His rival, Will Tiller, made this a Kiwi one-two on the leaderboard with a strong, consistent performance over the four days of racing.

The Red Bull Youth America’s Cup starts in less than a week and the 10 national youth teams are into their final preparations on San Francisco Bay.
The event runs from September 1-4, with four days of fleet racing off the America’s Cup Village at Marina Green.
On Saturday, August 31, there is a final day of practice with Speed Trials incorporated in the final training session – a spectator favourite.
“If I had to sum up the situation, I would say that this is a fantastic race course, with great boats and that our rivals are going to be tough,” said Antoine Lauriot-Prévost, the helmsman for the French entry, Next World Energy. “But we have a wonderful team here and everyone is focused.”

San Francisco, CA (August 15, 2013) – This week marks the final phase of the American Youth Sailing Force’s eighteen month campaign to win the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup (RBYAC).
The Force is sailing their newly commissioned AC45 catamaran in the official training sessions taking place from August 12 to August 28. They are sparring with nine other Youth teams who are vying to win the RBYAC that takes place Sept. 1 to 4 on San Francisco’s City Front.

With less than three weeks to go before the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup, training is well underway and the excitement and anticipation is building rapidly among the teams.
Next World Energy Sailing’s skipper Arthur Ponroy described the current feeling among the sailors. “Everyone is very happy, very excited to be here. There is a very good atmosphere,” he said.
That atmosphere is due in large part to the teams’ surroundings.
The RBYAC base shares Piers 30/32 with Emirates Team New Zealand and Luna Rossa Challenge and the young sailors are thrilled to be neighbors to the big boys. “It’s great to be so close to them. It lets us dream a little bit. Maybe in five or 10 years it will be us – we’ll be in these big team camps,” said Ponroy.

Red Bull Australia and NZ MD Jason Sargent joined Yachting Australia CEO Phil Jones today, in wishing Objective Australia Team members all the best in their preparations for the upcoming Red Bull Youth America’s Cup. Objective Australia is the team that will represent Australia in this upcoming inaugural series.
The event, an initiative of Red Bull, is the curtain raiser to the America’s Cup and will be sailed in the AC45 Class boats on San Francisco Bay from 1st to 4th September.
Three things mark this event as a standout; firstly the crews are all country of origin, returning to the original America’s Cup approach. Youth America's Cup 2013 - The American Youth Sailing Force (The Force) trained with Oracle Team USA coaches on AC45 catamarans three days last week and then went sailing with at risk students from San Francisco’s Downtown High School showing them first hand that you can follow your passion and earn a living on the water.
OTUSA’s coaching staff put The Force on the AC45’s in a wide range of conditions last week. Their goal was to help the team more effectively sail the very high-performance, very powerful AC45s. Force teammate, Evan Sjosjedt truly appreciates their input. 'Darren Bundock is an awesome coach to have at the back of the boat, he's always super helpful and friendly. Besides the invaluable on the water coaching, we spent a while going over each day's on board footage to dissect and discuss every tack, gybe and mark rounding with him.' And Sailing Team Manager, Ian Andrewes says, 'Its great having access to these guys. They have been doing it so long and have so much information to share.'
The Force is an exceptionally skilled group of youth sailors. Yet, as with any new yacht, time in the boat is vital to knowing how to sail it and to get the most out of its individual quirks and nuances. According to helmsman Michael Menninger, 'I learned, as a driver, that the more communication, the better. Keeping everyone on the same page and working towards the same immediate goal improves the cohesiveness within every maneuver. I also learned a few things about sailing the boat in a straight line. The more time in the 45 will be really helpful for all of us in our learning process.' Andrewes continues, 'This past week we have been really working hard on laylines and timing. These boats are tricky and with a reaching start style course, things can get overwhelming fast.'

Youth America's Cup 2013. The American Youth Sailing Force (The Force) greeted twelve international youth teams vying for four spots in September's main regatta in last month’s trials. With the competitors now selected, The Force gets down to work training on the AC45 this Friday. They know what’s needed to win the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup.
During the international trials, The Force’s yacht management and local skills made them instant experts while forging friendships with many of the would-be competitors. Team member, Mikey Radziejowski is excited about The Force meeting the international sailors, 'It was awesome getting to spend some time around our future competition. Whether they made into the Red Bull Youth America's Cup or not, it was great to get to know fellow youth sailors who were all here with the same goals.'
The Force’s detailed knowledge of the high-performance AC45 catamarans made them the go-to guys on the compound. 'Being in charge of the two Oracle Team USA AC45s and already being selected, instantly made us experts in front of all the international teams, and we had a lot of questions being asked about rigging and sailing the boats, even though we had only three days of sailing beforehand. The other really cool thing is, we ended up bonding with some of the other teams, and becoming good friends with some,' Mikey explained.
