ORMA 60 Team Australia loses mast while racing in the Pittwater to Coffs Harbour race
The ORMA 60 Team Australia (formerly Banque Populaire IV) has lost it's rig while competing in the Pittwater to Coffs Harbour Race. There were no injuries onboard and the boat is now travelling at slow speed under motor and jury rig towards Port Stephens.

The America’s Cup organizers have received notification from the principals of Hamilton Island Yacht Club of their intention to withdraw Team Australia from the 35th America’s Cup.
“We are very disappointed to be receiving this news,” said Russell Coutts, Director of the America’s Cup Event Authority (ACEA). “We were excited to have Australia as a challenger and we were also looking forward to the prospect of holding America’s Cup World Series events in Australia.
“But our focus going forward is with the teams that have already submitted challenges and the teams that have told us of their intent to do so before the entry deadline on August 8th.

Sydney to Mooloolaba Race, initial details announced with a start date of 25th of March 2015

Sydney to Mooloolaba Yacht Race 2015 - Middle Harbour Yacht Club (MHYC) has announced Wednesday 25th March 2015 as the date for the start of next year’s Sydney to Mooloolaba Yacht Race.
The race will again welcome both monohull and multihull entries for the 468 mile coastal classic.
The monohulls will race under Category 2 safety regulations while the details of the safety requirements for the multihulls are to be advised in the next few months.
MHYC’s Commodore, John McCuaig, has pushed forward to have the 2015 start date confirmed early, giving plenty of time for boat owners to plan for the race.
'The race start date should be a good fit within the Australian offshore racing calendar. It’s far enough in advance of Easter for entrants to also compete in the Brisbane to Gladstone Race or to use the Easter break to take their boats back to their home port or to return south in time for the Port Stephens Regatta,' McCuaig said.
Mooloolaba Yacht Club’s Commodore, Gary Schulz, concurred on the importance of confirming early next year’s race date. 'With the date now confirmed Mooloolaba can get on with the job of organising the details of finishing the boats and planning the traditional warm welcome.'

35th America's Cup, Oracle Team USA update from the Sydney training camp with Team Australia

ORACLE TEAM USA is in the midst of its second Sydney training camp.
As in March, some new sailors are getting a chance to strut their stuff, while the crew focuses on race practice against Team Australia.
“It’s going great so far. We have a few new guys here, who are fitting in really well,” said sailing team manager and helmsman Tom Slingsby.
“We just finished our fitness testing which has been pretty tough. We’ve seen a few of the boys crack, which is good to know, but it’s been great. We have a few more days to go and we’re going to get the most out of it."
Sailor Rome Kirby says he’s happy to be back out racing, with Team Australia pushing the defending America’s Cup champions.

Sydney to Mooloolaba race, Team Australia sole finisher after light conditions stymie competition from Seacart 30 trimaran 'Morticia' for handicap honours

The Sydney to Mooloolaba Yacht Race finally came to an end when BOQ Team Australia crossed the finish line off Point Cartwright at 6.48pm yesterday evening, Friday April 11, 2014, with an elapsed time of 53 hours, 48 minutes and 40 seconds for the 468 nautical mile course.
Crew members Ben Kelly, Sean and Peter Langman, Larry Jamieson, James Ogilvie and Josh Alexander were relieved and elated when they stepped off the 60-foot trimaran that delivered them safely from Sydney Harbour to Mooloolaba and a round of well-earned cold drinks and applauding onlookers.

A week from today a small group of multihull owners will mark a new chapter in the history of the Sydney to Mooloolaba Yacht Race, previously a major offshore event on the Australian calendar.
At the traditional start time of 1pm on a Wednesday pre-Easter, this time on April 9, Sean Langman’s record-busting ORMA 60 trimaran BOQ Team Australia is highly likely to lead the charge out of Sydney Harbour when the skipper’s quest for the trophy treble begins.
Beating Brindabella’s outright record of 1 day 20 hours 1 minute 43 seconds set 20 years ago, setting the first multihull line honours record and winning on handicap (OMR) are feasible given the boat’s achievements in southern waters, including two World Sailing Speed Council records.

35th America's Cup update, Mat Belcher appointed as skipper of Team Australia's AC45 catamaran

Hamilton Island Yacht Club (HIYC) has today set sail on its four-year Australian Challenge for the 35th America's Cup in 2017, with the announcement of Australian Sailing Team’s Olympic Gold Medallist Mathew Belcher as its skipper and the christening of Team Australia’s AC45 catamaran.
Yachting Australia’s Performance Director Peter Conde congratulated Belcher on his appointment and said:
“This is a fantastic opportunity for Mat and we are very excited for him as well as for our sponsor Hamilton Island and the Oatley family who have been strong supporters of the Australian Sailing Team over the last decade. We have very talented sailors on our team and it’s great to see that this is recognised by professional programs like the America’s Cup.”
“I congratulate both Mat and also our Australian Sailing Squad member David Gilmour who both have been named on Team Australia today. The Australian Sailing Team will be a big supporter of Team Australia.”
At the Team Australia media launch Iain Murray, CEO Team Australia, said Hamilton Island Yacht Club was keen for the immense talents of Australia’s sailors to be showcased.
“As a country, we’ve proven we can produce some of the best sailors in the world, and now it’s our turn to build an all-Aussie winning team skippered by one of most awarded Australian sailors. Mat is a remarkable example of an elite athlete and one of the most accomplished sailors that Australia has ever produced,” explained Murray.

Irritated that multihulls remain barred from major events like the Rolex Sydney Hobart and the Australia Day Regatta (see Related Content), Sydney sailing identity and owner of the Orma 60 Team Australia has decided to take matters into his own hands.
He has instructed a friend who is a lawyer and a sailor to draft the constitution for AORMA. the Australian Ocean Racing Multihull Association, which he hopes to get affiliated with Yachting Australia and become proactive in organising offshore events for multihulls.

Sean Langman's Orma 60 Team Australia steamed across the offshore finishing line in Coffs Harbour this morning at 0618hrs to create a new multihull race record in the Club Marine Pittwater to Coffs race with an official time of 17hrs 3mins 5secs.
“What a great way to start the New Year, really happy with the performance last year with the two world records so to get another course record is fantastic. I was wondering what 2014 was going to bring as 2013 was successful in a lot of ways in both business and yachting, so yeah a good way to start,” said Langman dockside at Coffs Harbour marina.
On the performance of the trimaran Langman offered, “ She did very well, we had to work hard through the night. The conditions were actually very testing, nothing like we were told in the weather briefing. There were a lot of coastal effects and with the Orma 60 you’re always on the edge and looking over your shoulder to see what’s coming next. We didn’t have any ugly hairy moments but we did hit 32 knots at one stage and decided to get the rag off and just play it safe. We shredded a halyard on the front sail so we got to work out a way of getting that down.

Pittwater to Coffs Harbour Race underway
This year is the debut of multihulls in this race which is run by the Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club with the ORMA60 Team Australia leading the charge. A number of multihulls from Pittwater are competing including Indian Chief/grainger catamaran, Voodoo Spirit/Egan trimaran and Morticia a Seacart 30 trimaran.

A spectacular start is forecast for the first ocean race of the New Year, the 33rd Club Marine Pittwater to Coffs Harbour yacht race hosted by The Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club, starting tomorrow.
When the quality fleet of 39 line up for the start at 1pm tomorrow, BOM forecast a 20 knot Northerly ahead of southerly change of 15 to 20 knots in the afternoon and evening with a swell of South to southeasterly around 1 metre.
As the fleet make their way up the coast into Friday morning through the Hunter and Port Macquarie towards Coffs Harbour they face northeast to southeasterly 10 to 15 knots during the morning then tending north to northeasterly 20 to 30 knots during the afternoon.
The race will see the debut of multihulls to the event and will have their own start 15 minutes after the monohulls leave the line. The four in contention will be led by the impressive record-breaking Orma 60 trimaran Team Australia, skippered by Sean Langman and if no mishaps will be in Coffs Harbour well ahead of the entire fleet to create a brand new multihull race record and historic moment.

Interview with Sean Langman on recent foray to New Zealand setting records and winning races (part 1)

Sean Langman has been in the marine services game for 33 years now. His Noakes brand and facilities are almost as identifiable as he is. However, it is Sean’s personal craft that have ended up with very recognisable colloquial names, which could well be the most famous of the lot. The Skiff on Steroids still garners a mention every now and then, for instance. So having smashed the record earlier this year for the run between Sydney and Hobart and then Sydney to Auckland, in a boat known as Big Bird (Team Australia), it’s certainly is time to find out what’s on the go right now.
When asked of the run to Auckland to partake in the Coastal Classic, Sean said, 'Yes it was a good tour and it definitely all fell into place for us. We gave Clouds (Roger Badham) an impossible task, again. After setting the first record, he managed to find us a window that would get us there with a week to spare to set up for the Coastal Classic, which is really what we were aiming to do.

Sean Langman of Team Australia awarded the Bennetto medal for his achievements in ocean racing

Yachting Tasmania Sailing Awards day was held on Sunday 24th November 2013. Paralympic sailor Matt Bugg today was named Yachting Tasmania’s Male Sailor of the Year for 2012-2013, while the Female Sailor of the Year award went to champion Mirror dinghy sailors Jessie Atherton and Katherine Maher.
The prestigious Bennetto Medal for ocean racing was awarded to Sean Langman in recognition of his many and varied exploits on the ocean, many linked with Tasmania.
Yachting Tasmania president Ed Vincent presented the annual Sailing Awards and announced five new inductees into the Yachting Hall of Fame at a reception at Bellerive Yacht Club.

Finish time: 20;12;43 UTC on 18;10;13
Elapsed time: 2 days 19 hours 2 minutes and 45 seconds
Distance: 1265NM
Average speed: 18.87kts
Comments: A Benchmark will have been set during the 1997/8 Volvo Race which certainly will have been slower than this claim. At present we have been unable to establish this crossing time.

PIC Insurance brokers Coastal Classic 2013 poised to start, Team Australia and Team Vodafone Sailing the headline act

In the preparation for the Coastal Classic, Team Australia’s head-to-head with Team VodafoneSailing on Waitemata Harbour, Auckland, yesterday was a mixed bag for the visitors. Result aside, skipper Sean Langman is confident the Australian boat and crew have the ticker to successfully challenge the local ORMA 60 this Friday.
In the showcase sprint race the Aussie trimaran led Team VodafoneSailing off the start line, expectations resting heavily on the afterguard including Mike Sanderson and celebrity guest crewmember, Team New Zealand skipper Dean Barker in his first race since the 34th America’s Cup.
The sprint kicked off with a downwind start off Westhaven Marina at 1600hrs. Langman’s Team Australia gybed early and grabbed a several hundred metre advantage over Simon Hull’s near identical ORMA 60 by the time the frontrunner reached Orakei and North Head.
