America's Cup: Emirates Team NZ and Luna Rossa get third day of racing.

Emirates Team NZ's AC72 was out on the water for her 26th day of sailing of the 30 allowed before February 1, 2013 under the Protocol governing the 34th America's Cup. Predictwind ecorded winds averaging 25kts at noon and peaking at 30kts. The winds eased by 5kts later in the day both in average and gusts.

America's Cup, Artemis Team update no.3

The America's Cup Artemis team have posted an update of ther recent progress in sailing and learning about their AC72 and how to get the most out of it.  Loick Peyron is mentoring Nathan Outteridge on sailing big multihulls and the team are logging data and gaining experience.

Phuket King's Cup event just about to commence

The Phuket King's Cup has for many years now integrated a multihull division and also the one design Mark Pescott catamarans built to the "Firefly 850" design which provide thier crews with close and exciting racing.

After 25 years there is still no outright winner when it come to bragging rights for winning the Phuket Kings Cup. This year’s entry list is lacking some of the usual faces, possibly leaving the field open to a new name.

In the early years of the event it was Henry Kaye, Bill Gasson and Jeffrey Lowe whose names kept repeating on the leader board, and then Ray Roberts, and Neil Pryde as well. Gasson, Pryde and Roberts all have four wins apiece, but none of them are competing this year. How about a ‘Masters’ division next year?

Americas Cup news: Italian Luna Rossa team protest over spying and venue switch

It has been a busy week for rules advisers for the Italian Challenger for the 34th America's Cup, Luna Rossa.

Two protests have been lodged with the International Jury. And the Jury Chairman has responded with a terse reminder to teams about leaking Jury documents to the media

The first revolves around espionage by the America's Defender, Oracle Team USA, and would seem to be the latest round of a long Cup tradition of information gathering on competitors, during the vital final design window before the commencement of the America's Cup Regatta.

In 1983 espionage claims were rife, as the then Defender, New York Yacht Club, tried to find out details of the winged keel of Australia II. In 1992 it was taken to new heights by Bill Koch, who conducted a full espionage campaign, all perfectly within the very lax rules, and was able to develop an accurate profile of each competitor, and then designed a radical, narrow boat, which proved unbeatable in the 1992 America's Cup.

Artemis team, crew changes for the AC72 program

After just four days of sailing in the their new AC72 America's Cup Challenger, Artemis Racing, have announced several key changes in the afterguard.

Gone is skipper, Terry Hutchinson, who has been with the team since its inception, and on-board are a bevy of Olympic Gold Medalists, plus highly experienced multihull skipper and technical specialist, Loick Peyron.

The Challenger of Record for the 34th America’s Cup, announced a new afterguard featuring Olympic Gold medalists; Iain Percy (GBR), Nathan Outteridge (AUS) and Santiago Lange (ARG) as well as Loïck Peyron (FRA). Artemis Racing believe the technical and multihull experience of this group will provide an efficient nucleus to guide the team’s AC72, particularly through the next few critical months of sailing and testing.

Iain Percy will also act as sailing team director. CEO Paul Cayard is still listed as tactician.

Peter How has just launched his F-22R on Gariep dam in South Africa and writes:

Hi Ian

Most of the bugs sorted out now, including the jib furling. Upwind it points well and sails almost
at the same speed as the apparent wind on my handheld meter.

Sails hands off in a straight line. Folding the floats on the water for docking on the trailer each
day is very easy. The low weight and wide mast cord make it risky to leave out next to a jetty with our Karoo
winds (60 knots downdraft measured at Oviston down the lake last week).

Peter Hoejland launched his F-22R last year, and has now completed a full sailing season. Peter writes:

Hello Ian

End of first season with the F-22R. Here in Denmark it is almost winter and no more sailing until spring

The boat has behaved and performed beautifully. We have not done a lot of racing, but the speed is
impressive. Other multihulls have to be a lot bigger to keep up, and we are constantly improving,
especially as we get more comfortable with the boat and put more pressure on her. It can take a lot
more wind than you think

It goes up (and down) wind and tacks with any sail configuration. Also jib only, if we want to take it
easy. That is a very nice feature when the wife and I are cruising. On the other hand she is also getting
addicted to the speed, so not much taking it easy.
