Its’ been an exciting couple of years for the New Zealand Multihull Yacht Club, the development of foils from the America’s cup is coming down into the classes, we are starting to see a whole range foiling systems and designs.
At the Boat Show this year we have the 2 ETNZ SL33’s. A design by Peter Melvin called Foiled and an updated trimaran called Dragon with new foils.
We also have 2 great large cruising Cats on display, Bad Kitty by Clever Fox and Katariana by Ron Given.
As well as a great range of the 8.5 class, the famous Dirty Deeds and Whio, an updated GBE.
In the open class we have Foiled by Peter Melvin, the Classic Johnny T designed This Way up and the Brand new Farrier 32 Superbad.
So if you just want to have a nosy or are looking at getting into Multihull’s come along and meet the Guys from the club.
As well as Famous Designers to talk to and discuss your future projects with such as Roger Hill and Derek Kelsall

ON THE WATER

TWO SL33’s:During the 2010 America's Cup and development of the 2013 AC72 Rule, Morrelli & Melvin worked with SL Performance Race Boats GmbH in Germany to design the SL33 high performance catamaran. All-carbon and extremely high-performance, these boats are designed for Elite class racing. The boat can be sailed shorthanded, yet it is the ideal platform for three or four sailors. Boat 1 owned by Mike Drummond and Bruce Curson, Boat 2 Owned by Mike Sanderson and Chris McMaster
Dirty Deeds: Designed to the Open 8.5 Class multihull box rule Dirty Deeds was launched in October 2007 and has since had considerable success on the Auckland racing circuit including Division Handicap & Line Honours in the 2011 Coastal Classic, Several RNZYS Series wins and Held 4 National 8.5 Class Titles.

SuperBad: Farrier 32RX Launched in December 2013 and just been cruised since then. 3 years to build. Shown by Craig Prentice

This Way Up: Designed and built by Jonny T a fun Club boat shown by Mathew Flynn & Ross Pratt
Trimaran Dragon: Dragon has had an extensive no expense spared total rebuild that has made this boat virtually brand new. Dragon in her first race since the re-launch competed in the 2013 Coastal classic where she finished 10th boat overall in difficult conditions.

ON THE HARD STAND

In the tents are Rodger Hill and Derek Kelsall to discuss your future projects
The Viper: by Goodal Design. The Viper is an ISAF One Design Class, that also fits the F16 box rule. There are around 300 Vipers worldwide with countries like Belgium and France using them as a pathway boat toward the Olympics.
A Class Geltek Flyer II converted to a foiling setup with DNA J boards and professionally designed and built rudders with elevators. Owned and modified by a Team New Zealand designer.
Weta: The Weta is a 4.4 meter fibreglass/foam composite trimaran with a boomless main, jib and roller furling gennaker. It can be sailed single handed or with four people.

Matakana Island Raid 2014 for off the beach cats, 7th February Tauranga Yacht and Power Boat club

The Matakana Island raid for 2014 is fast approaching

This exciting social race is now into it's 6th edition, and is open to multihulls with a LOA 5m and greater. Plenty of fun to be had, meet new friends and catch up with old ones.

This years race begins with a Friday night race starting off the yacht club on 7th Feb, although if you miss this leg not to worry this year this result can be dropped, and dinner can be ordered from the yacht club.

Saturday will see racing up to Bowentown, and staying at the family friendly Athenree hot pools and camp ground. On Sunday we'll race back to Tauranga

The CRC Bay of Islands Sailing Week is one of New Zealand's most popular yachting events. The regatta is open to keelers, multi-hulls, trailer sailers, sports and open keelboats, with competitive racing over three days. Courses are designed to suit the various divisions with a range of windward/leeward triangle races & bay races that use the many natural obstacles in the Bay of Islands. Cruising yachts and crews are encouraged to join the competition in the island racing divisions sailing one bay race a day. Every year hundreds of competitors, family and friends come together to enjoy an amazing array of course options amongst some of the most beautiful sailing waters New Zealand has to offer.

We have received the President's Award at the 2013 Volvo Yachting NZ Excellence awards held in Auckland on November 29th 2013.

This is a huge achievement and recognises the time and effort put in to make the Bay of Islands Sailing week one of New Zealand's premier yachting events. Congratulations to Ray Haslar, committee members, volunteers, and all the sailors who make it happen!

PIC Insurance brokers NZ Coastal Classic, starts at 10am on 25th October strong multihull division and ORMA60's Team Australia and Team Vodafone to go head to head

Starting at 10am on Friday 25 October, The PIC Insurance Brokers Coastal Classic is a 119 nautical mile sprint from Devonport Wharf in Auckland, to Russell Wharf in the Bay of Islands, and is regarded as one of the world's great yacht races.

Ideal conditions for a record running race are a strong south-easterly. But according to NIWA statistics, there is just a 1.1% chance of a strong south-easterly occurring in October.  The race starts at 10am on Friday 25 October, and upwards of 170 boats are expected.

Followers can catch the start from North Head, Tamaki Drive, and on the race website, www.coastalclassic.co.nz
Times to beat

TeamVodafoneSailing set its second consecutive race record in 2012 when it crossed the line in Russell in 5hr41:44, sailing at an average speed of 20 knots across the course, and improviding the 2011 record by just over 3 minutes.

F40 trimaran Agir, what has happened to her?

Well the news is good for the former Biscuits Cantreau 4 trimaran it's being rebuilt by it's new owner at Lloyd Stevenson boatworks in New Zealand.  It will be great to see this beast out on the water again.

Auckland to Musket Cove race update, Team Vodafone powering up in stronger conditions

The ORMA60 trimaran, TeamVodafonesailing has found the breeze in the Auckland Fiji Race. But the Ray Lodge designed and owned, Wild Card, leads fleet on handicap, on the second day of the classic race.

Emailing this afternoon from a location 210 nautical miles North-East of Cape Reinga, and nearly 300 nautical miles from the startline at Westhaven Marina in Auckland, TeamVodafone Sailing have reported breezes of up to 20 knots, and boat speeds of 23-26 knots. They set their first reef and trinquet at 1000hrs today, and have now added a second reef.

Team Vodafone ORMA60 dismasts during Auckland Regatta

When starting a race at the Auckland Regatta Team Vodafone Sailing's ORMA60 dropped it's wingmast rig.  Nobody injured and the rig has been recovered and they are looking at the best way to repair it, looks like it was a forestay fitting failure this time.

“This time you didn’t win but you certainly didn’t lose. You only lose when you don’t have the courage to return. Not winning is part of the learning process which leads you to success.” Peter Blake.

One evening, on the 3rd February 1997 in an office near the Duomo of Milan, Patrizio Bertelli and yacht designer German Frers are discussing the construction of a cruising boat. Suddenly German Frers asks Bertelli "Why don't we do the America's Cup?" "Let's do the America's Cup!" In 15 days, from scratch, the core of the sports program is designed; the Luna Rossa Team is born.

In September 2011 curious about the performance of the AC 45 catamarans, Patrizio Bertelli goes to Plymouth to follow the second round of races in the America’s Cup World Series. It's a rainy, cold day, with 15 – 18 knots of wind; yachts fly, they tack like single-hulls, they nearly overtake the chase boat! Patrizio Bertelli immediately starts to think about the possible involvement of Luna Rossa in the 2012 ACWS circuit.

French, he acquired a wide experience in the design and building of multi-hulls, including the maxi trimaran “Sodebo”. He obtained numerous wins, both as a sailor and as a designer. They include winning the 2010 America’s Cup with BMW Oracle Racing, where he was design co-ordinator and structural engineering manager, and the Fastnet 2011 in the 40 class.

New homebuilt C Class catamaran designed and built by Keith MacKinven

Designed and built by Keith MacKinven is the new C Class catamaran Boadicea II.  Construction method featuring ply except on the round bilge which is made from strip cedar.   Main beam is aluminium rear is carbon.  It has a 13 metre carbon mast and on it's first sail achieved 13 knots in 10 knots of breeze being sailed conservatively with much more speed to come once sorted out.  It's great to see some homebuilt C Class catamarans being constructed.
