Weta trimaran chosen as a class to compete in the World Masters Games to be held in New Zealand in 2017

Yachting New Zealand has announced that the Weta has been chosen as one of the classes for the World Masters Games, to be held in New Zealand in 2017.

With more athletes than the Olympics, the World Masters Games is the single biggest multisport event on earth. Now in 2017, the event will come to Auckland New Zealand. The World Masters Games is for everyone – whether you play to stay fit, to have fun or quite simply to win. In 2017, 25,000 athletes will converge on Auckland for the event of a lifetime.

Sailing joins 27 other sports codes as one of 28 announced as an ‘Official Sport’ of World Masters Games 2017 and while the final sports programme is still to be finalised, sailing will offer racing in the Laser and Weta classes.

It seems a little hard to believe that it was three and half years ago that I first sailed the Weta, off Takapuna Beach on Auckland’s North Shore.

That day in a 10-12kt sea breeze the Weta was put through her paces, sailing singlehanded.

It was a memorable sail – a few months after BMW Oracle Racing had won the America’s Cup sailing their 120ft wingsailed trimaran.

Having seen the massive trimaran flying her mainhull with relative ease, the obvious objective was to see if the Weta would do the same. Despite several carefully angled runs, and with the Code Zero fully powered up, we never got close.

But it was a great experience to be able to run three sails while sailing singlehanded.

Over the intervening three years, multihulls have become much more mainstream – largely off the back of the AC72’s and the America’s Cup – but what is like to race a Weta single handed?

An invitation to have another test sail soon got upped into a Media Race – competing against Boating New Zealand's Ben Gladwell - nothing quite like keeping it in the family, is there?

Tom Raidna is an amateur boatbuilder, sailor and most importantly … a small trimaran enthusiast :-) He contact me the other day to show me an economical project he’d recently completed — a small tri model designed by Jim Michalak called “Trilars.”

This kind of project represents exactly the kind of home-grown fun I love reading about — a sailing guy making something with wood and then going out on the water to test it all out!

Join us for some great summer sailing in Ventura, California on the weekend of June 22-23.  Spend Saturday with an on-the-water coach for some skill-building and camaraderie, and enjoy Sunday with three to five short, fun races.  This event coincides with Summer Sailstice, so you can do both at the same time!

Can’t dedicate the whole weekend? Choose a day!  The Saturday activities will be geared toward folks who want more time on the water and would like some coaching to increase their skill handling a Weta.  Sunday will be fun racing and a good opportunity for racing noobs to practice starts and mark rounding with a fleet of us.  Ventura consistently serves up great sailing conditions in the summer, with winds in the low to high teens, so there will be fun for everyone.
