American Andrew Campbell is the newest recruit to join Oracle Team USA and he is making his debut with the team during its training camp in Sydney Australia this week.
A four-time All-American, Campbell was a standout sailor at the collegiate level, leading his Georgetown University sailing team to three single-handed national championships, among other titles. Incredibly, on a list dominated by football and basketball players, Campbell has been named among Georgetown’s all-time Top 10 Athletes by Sports Illustrated magazine.
Following up his college sailing with Olympic campaigns in the Laser and Star class, Campbell sailed for the United States in the Laser in the 2008 Olympic Games in China.
And it’s from a relationship formed in the Laser that he comes to Oracle Team USA
'I’ve been racing a lot against (Oracle Team USA tactician and sailing team manager) Tom Slingsby over the last 12 years,' Campbell says. 'We went to the youth worlds in 2002 and competed against each other in the Laser and we’ve either been racing each other or at least racing in events on the same circuit as each other for a long time. Tom is my main connection here.'

35th America's Cup update, Mat Belcher appointed as skipper of Team Australia's AC45 catamaran

Hamilton Island Yacht Club (HIYC) has today set sail on its four-year Australian Challenge for the 35th America's Cup in 2017, with the announcement of Australian Sailing Team’s Olympic Gold Medallist Mathew Belcher as its skipper and the christening of Team Australia’s AC45 catamaran.
Yachting Australia’s Performance Director Peter Conde congratulated Belcher on his appointment and said:
“This is a fantastic opportunity for Mat and we are very excited for him as well as for our sponsor Hamilton Island and the Oatley family who have been strong supporters of the Australian Sailing Team over the last decade. We have very talented sailors on our team and it’s great to see that this is recognised by professional programs like the America’s Cup.”
“I congratulate both Mat and also our Australian Sailing Squad member David Gilmour who both have been named on Team Australia today. The Australian Sailing Team will be a big supporter of Team Australia.”
At the Team Australia media launch Iain Murray, CEO Team Australia, said Hamilton Island Yacht Club was keen for the immense talents of Australia’s sailors to be showcased.
“As a country, we’ve proven we can produce some of the best sailors in the world, and now it’s our turn to build an all-Aussie winning team skippered by one of most awarded Australian sailors. Mat is a remarkable example of an elite athlete and one of the most accomplished sailors that Australia has ever produced,” explained Murray.

34th America's Cup, Part 1 of interview with designer Paul Bieker on his work with Oracle Team USA

Few people in the sailing world are sharper than Paul Bieker, a soft-spoken Seattle-based naval architect who has spent his career designing a wide variety of sailing vessels, from super-quick I-14s and his one-off line of 'Riptide' racer/cruisers, to America’s Cup yachts.
Bieker is one of the core designers credited with 'super-charging' Oracle Team USA’s 'USA 17' last September, changes that helped the American-flagged international team to successfully pull-off one of sports history’s greatest comebacks to defend the 34th America’s Cup.
Yet pull up a seat on the rail next to Bieker-as I’ve been fortunate enough to do on many occasions aboard our mutual friend’s Riptide 44-and it quickly becomes obvious that Bieker’s horizons extends far beyond racecourse designs.
Take, for example, the day that he brought our crew lunch. Each sandwich was individually wrapped in brown recycled paper and was hand-tied with a bit of hemp twine in an effort to reduce landfill fodder. Or then there’s Bieker’s insistence that his Riptide designs offer their owners a huge amount of value and utility, irrespective of whether the agenda involves racing, savoring 25-knot kite rides or extended cruising. Bieker is widely regarded as one of the world’s foremost foil-design experts, and while he wisely tries to dodge the limelight, Oracle Team USA has again tapped Bieker for AC35, this time in the role of lead design engineer.
I recently caught up with Bieker at a local Ballard (our mutual Seattle neighborhood) pub for part one of this two-part interview to get his thoughts on how AC34 was won, his design role for AC35, as well as his thoughts on the future of America’s Cup Racing.
Can you tell me about your work with Oracle Team USA, prior to the start of AC34? What were you designing for them?
It was in the late summer/early fall [of 2012] and I think that Oracle had a sense that their appendage engineering and construction side was not going 100-percent smoothly. My first day down there was the day before they launched the boat, and the day they broke their first foil. So pretty much from then on it was full-on, as you can image.

M32 racing catamaran cup, Event underway in Miami

M32 Gold Cup is the first ”unofficial World Championship” where 4 US boats and 4 European boats will see four days of intense racing on Biscayne Bay in Miami.
After trying the format during the M32 Winter Series in january, now it’s for real. Today all of the teams took part in two practice races in 4-5 knots of patchy and shifty winds. It became apparent that this won’t be easy for the early favorites.
Wallén Racing won both races after mastering the conditions better than the other teams. If winning the tune-up is a bad omen or not, we’ll see in the next four days.
What’s the big deal
M32 attracts some of the best sailors from different parts of the sport. Olympic champions, Volvo Ocean Race winners and America’s Cup sailors battle it out in boat that they love to sail. It’s also a great stepping stone for young sailors who want to move on to Extreme Sailing Series and America’s Cup.
Fredrik Lööf, Olympic Champion: This is the most exciting boat ever.
Ken Read, CEO North Sails and VOR skipper: After playing around on a M32 catamaran in Sweden last year I found my next boat.
With active fleets on two continents, fifteen boats sailing and seven more in build – M32 is the only established multihull class in this size. And it’s growing rapidly.

Morticia skippered by Chris Williams has dominated the first two days of racing with two firsts and a second putting him well clear of his competition.
