Dick Newick, multihull design pioneer across the bar
Multihull designer and luminary Dick Newick has passed away. Dick brought a special flair to multihulls with his seaworthy craft and their organic forms and graceful design. A cheerful smile and a strong intellect rounded out an individual with a special gift. Just a few of Dick's better known designs are the "Atlantic" proa Cheers and the trimarans Moxie, Rogue Wave, Third Turtle and Ocean Surfer. He was active till the end and attended the Golden Oldies Trophy event in May along with Marc Van Petegham, James Wharram and Hanneke Boon.

F40 trimaran Agir, what has happened to her?
Well the news is good for the former Biscuits Cantreau 4 trimaran it's being rebuilt by it's new owner at Lloyd Stevenson boatworks in New Zealand. It will be great to see this beast out on the water again.

Red Bull Youth America's Cup, Racing starts on September 1st, 2013

The Red Bull Youth America’s Cup starts in less than a week and the 10 national youth teams are into their final preparations on San Francisco Bay.
The event runs from September 1-4, with four days of fleet racing off the America’s Cup Village at Marina Green.
On Saturday, August 31, there is a final day of practice with Speed Trials incorporated in the final training session – a spectator favourite.
“If I had to sum up the situation, I would say that this is a fantastic race course, with great boats and that our rivals are going to be tough,” said Antoine Lauriot-Prévost, the helmsman for the French entry, Next World Energy. “But we have a wonderful team here and everyone is focused.”

Leigh McMillan’s team were unflappable on the final day, winning three of the seven races and the Omani team will walk away from Wales as champions – and with it regaining an advantage on the overall Series leaderboard. However, despite winning on Welsh waters, McMillan is preparing for the battle for the 2013 Series championship to go all the way to the end of the line: “We're not any more confident after this win, we've got a lot of work on our hands. America's Cup update, Sail Racing Magazine on the Emirates Team New Zealand winning the Louis Vuitton Cup and progressing to confront Oracle Team USA for the America's Cup

Thick fog across most of the race course and the lightest flukiest winds so far in the competition did not slow down the Kiwi crew on the Emirates Team New Zealand AC72 today as they dismissed the Italian Luna Rossa syndicate with a massive win in the eighth race of the Louis Vuitton Cup Final.
If anything, the margin of advantage for the Kiwis was even greater in the 12-14 knot conditions which prevailed for most of the race. Both teams flew gennakers on the first downwind leg and ETNZ immediately began to pull away, sailing three to four knots better VMG angles than Luna Rossa. Upwind too they didn't put a foot wrong and by the time they turned at the top mark for the last time they were more than three minutes ahead.
Dean Barker's boys turned on the style on the final reach to the finish, tearing across the finish line at 40 knots to the obvious delight of the crowds of spectators at the Pier 27 America's Cup Race Village.

It's not overstating matters to suggest that designer Pete Melvin is the father of the AC72s, the blisteringly fast catamarans of the 34th America's Cup.
Even more surprisingly, Melvin - a sailing coach for Oracle racing before becoming a multi-hull design guru - is the man who played a major role in designing the wingsail for the giant 90ft trimaran, known as BOR 90; the yacht which won the Cup for Oracle in 2010 in a deed of gift showdown against Alinghi's giant catamaran.

To wrap up the opening days proceedings, the Extreme Sailing Series skippers tonight joined British and Irish lions heroes and two of international rugby’s best-known stars, Leigh halfpenny and Alex Cuthbert at the Cardiff Blues home ground to see for themselves what the Welsh do best.

The towering masts of the Extreme Sailing Series™ fleet dominated the Cardiff Bay skyline today, as eight Extreme 40s took to the water for one final shake down ahead of Act 6, Cardiff hosted by Cardiff Harbour Festival. Gliding round the Bay under bright skies and tactically demanding light airs, today’s series of short preview races came as a final chance for the circuits new faces and old hands to sharpen their swords and polish up their armor ahead of the battle of Cardiff Bay, kicking off on Friday 23rd August at 1400 BST.
Making their racing debut at one of the highlight events in the Extreme Sailing Series calendar, ChinaSpirit used the day’s practice racing as an opportunity to ‘iron out the final creases’ as the team’s Kiwi skipper Phil Robertson explained: “It was great to get out on the water today ahead of the main event, we’re getting better and better as a team and we’re in a good place going into tomorrow’s racing. We’ve started at the bottom, but we’re ready to work out way up. ChinaSpirit are a brand new Chinese team and we’re thrilled to be here in Cardiff.”

A recent update on the Grainger/Rocket Factory trimarans website indicates that the first RAW 30 (Airplay) trimaran has been launched just a picture of the rig at this stage hopefully more details to follow.

Sail Racing Magazine talk to Glenn Ashby wing trimmer about the nosedive in Race 2 of the Louis Vuitton Cup

The most heart stopping moment of the 34th America's Cup action so far was the huge bear way crash which saw the Emirates Team New Zealand AC72 nosedive at the windward mark race two. (In case you have been living up a mountain with no internet or left the planet temporarily in the last few days the video clip is at the end of this article).
So what exactly went wrong on the Kiwi boat to trigger such a spectacular nose dive that it thew the majority of the crew into a tangled heap and flicked two of them unceremoniously into San Francisco Bay.

The most heart stopping moment of the 34th America's Cup action so far was the huge bear way crash which saw the Emirates Team New Zealand AC72 nosedive at the windward mark race two. (In case you have been living up a mountain with no internet or left the planet temporarily in the last few days the video clip is at the end of this article).
So what exactly went wrong on the Kiwi boat to trigger such a spectacular nose dive that it thew the majority of the crew into a tangled heap and flicked two of them unceremoniously into San Francisco Bay.

The Hydros team's persistence has paid off with them claiming the Blue Ribbon Record (Ruben Bleu) on Lake Geneva. Despite a rudder breakage they have managed to improve on the current record which is held by a Decision 35 catamaran by 8 minutes.

The often bizarre world of the America's Cup took a new twist today with the release of two new reports form the International Jury.
In fact, only one of the reports was new - that of a clarification from the Chairman of the Measurement Committee - on some points made earlier in his report to the International Jury concerning the taking out of class of three AC45 catamarans managed by Oracle Team USA.
The situation was discovered by boatbuilders from America's Cup Management, when they were assembling and equalising the AC45's to be used for the Red Bull Youth America's Cup Series.
Initially the report from the Chief Measurer has it that three forward kingposts (supporting struts under the mast and sprit of the AC45's) were found to be overweight, and had weight added to them by Oracle Team USA.

Airlie Beach Race Week 2013, Final results for multihulls in Divisions 1,2,3 and PHS

In the 2013 Australian National Multihull Championship the top place getters in each division were in OMR Division 1, Chris Williams’s Morticia with a clean sweep of six races.
OMR Division 2 was won by Andrew Stransky and his family on Fantasia who finished on six points.
In OMR Division 3, it was a very close contest with Tony Richardson’s Pocahontas coming out in front with 10 points, just on ahead of Mike Willcocks’s Hot Option.
The PHS Multihull Division won by Clare and Wayne Kirby’s Clear Horizons.
Multihull national measurer, Mike Hodges, reported the OMR Division 1 winner, the Sea Cart 30 Morticia, blitzed every race. “I know during the week that some of the guys have been on the internet looking to see if they can buy one.
“The boat did the Brisbane to Gladstone race this year and everybody was expecting big things of it, but it didn’t perform. But at the same time the guys hadn’t had it very long and they didn’t have any experience of it. That’s six months ago. Since then they have sailed it regularly, tuned it up and optimised it to the OMR rule and now they have a boat that is an absolute master blaster.
“Everybody seems perfectly happy with the location for the nationals. It’s a great place to have a national championships. I would be surprised if the Australian multihull championships don’t come back to Airlie Beach within the next two to three years,” Hodges said.

Emirates Team New Zealand meets old rival Luna Rossa in a best of 13 match – the team to win seven races first will win the cup.

San Francisco, CA (August 15, 2013) – This week marks the final phase of the American Youth Sailing Force’s eighteen month campaign to win the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup (RBYAC).
The Force is sailing their newly commissioned AC45 catamaran in the official training sessions taking place from August 12 to August 28. They are sparring with nine other Youth teams who are vying to win the RBYAC that takes place Sept. 1 to 4 on San Francisco’s City Front.

In OMR Division 1, Morticia’s Chris Williams called the race “painful”, but who is he to complain when his team had just won their fifth straight race. They sailed the Sea Cart 30 beautifully through the glass-outs and the soft offshore northerly, sailing through the monohulls and well ahead of Mal Richardson’s Malice and George Owen’s APC Mad Max.
Overall this places Morticia in an unbeatable top position with five points. The battle tomorrow will then be between Jason Gard’s Spirit and Robert Remilton’s Wilparnia II, as long as both sail well the Pioneer Bay course.
In OMR Division 2, handicap honours went again to Philip Day’s Rhythmic. The division is still being led by Andrew Stransky’s Fantasia on eight points, then Rhythmic on 10 points with Rupert King’s Overdrive on 18 points.
OMR Division 3 was won today by Gary Scott’s Coco Loco. The overall lead is with Mike Willcocks’s Hot Option on 11 points, followed by Tony Richardson’s Pocahontas on 15 points and Geoff Floyd’s Fifty Fifty on 16 points.
All these three divisions will be able to discard their worst result after tomorrow’s race.
In the PHS Multihull Division, the overall lead is still held by Clare and Wayne Kirby’s Clear Horizons.

OMR Division 3 was won today by Gary Scott’s Coco Loco. The overall lead is with Mike Willcocks’s Hot Option on 11 points, followed by Tony Richardson’s Pocahontas on 15 points and Geoff Floyd’s Fifty Fifty on 16 points.
All these three divisions will be able to discard their worst result after tomorrow’s race.
In the PHS Multihull Division, the overall lead is still held by Clare and Wayne Kirby’s Clear Horizons.
