The latest edition of AC Discovered is now available it follows the evolution of America's Cup yachts from 12 metres to AC45 catamarans.

Early bird entries open for the UK 2013 Round the Island Race

The Round the Island Race in the UK has seen some epic performances over the years by both multihull and monohull crews the course starting in Cowes on the Isle of Wight attracts massive fleets with the multihull division ranging from massive super maxi trimarans to trailerable trimarans last year the Multi 50 Actual smoked around the Island in fresh conditions and came within a minute of breaking the multihull record held by Francis Joyon.  The entries are now open for the 2013 race.

34th Australian Nacra Catamaran Nationals, Day 4

The Nacra National Championship 2013 returned to its gusty nature on the fourth day of sailing with only two races completed in the afternoon as carnage and capsizes continued to mar the competition off the Hervey Bay Sailing Club. 

Day four of sailing at the Nacra nationals saw the return of the strong wind conditions from earlier in the week. A single session of sailing was held in the afternoon, with two races completed. Gusts on the course got stronger and longer as the session wore on and the carnage and capsizes continued. Nine races have been sailed now and once ten races are sailed a second drop comes into play.

New homebuilt C Class catamaran designed and built by Keith MacKinven

Designed and built by Keith MacKinven is the new C Class catamaran Boadicea II.  Construction method featuring ply except on the round bilge which is made from strip cedar.   Main beam is aluminium rear is carbon.  It has a 13 metre carbon mast and on it's first sail achieved 13 knots in 10 knots of breeze being sailed conservatively with much more speed to come once sorted out.  It's great to see some homebuilt C Class catamarans being constructed.

Roman Paszke's westabout circumnavigation attempt (Paszke360)

Polish sailor Roman Paszke is attempting to do a westabout navigation of the globe in record time on his 27 metre Marstrom ocean racing catamaran.  It's been a rocky road for him with gear breakages ending the first attempt and more problems on the more recent attempt with his rudder.  The site is in Polish but google translate seems to work well enough to give you a good idea whats happening.

Multihull Class

Olivier Vigoureux, boat captain of Peter Aschenbrenner's ballistic trimaran, Paradox, has confirmed that the 63ft Nigel Irens-designed flyer will be competing:

'We can definitely go faster this year, given the right conditions. Ideally we would like 20 knots of wind, then we might just be able to keep up with Leopard," suggested Olivier. "The course record set by Region Guadeloupe in the first race will be very difficult for Paradox to beat as we have more weight and less sail area, but who knows, if we get the right conditions, anything can happen."

Lloyd Thornburg's Gunboat 66, Phaedo, returns to RORC Caribbean 600 action, having won the Multihull Class in 2011. For the 2013 edition, Jules Verne record holder, Brian Thompson will be part of a stellar crew. However, Phaedo should have a close battle on the water with the latest Gunboat 66 to be launched, Slim, skippered by South African, Travis McGarry.

A Notice of Race for the Hobie 14, Dragoon, Tiger and Wild Cat World Championships at Travemuende, Germany will be released by our hosts this month. To assist with holidays the following schedule has been released.  20 & 21July 2013 measurement with practice race in the afternoon (21st) and opening ceremony on 21st evening.  22-27 July 2013 Racing with the prize giving on the evening on the 27th of July.

 

These World Championships would be a bring-your-own-boat world championships. We have created a message board so that sailors can request information. Also people that are not attending the worlds may wish to make their boats available for charter.

34th Nacra Australia Championships, great sailing conditions on day 3

The third day of sailing at the Nacra Nationals was a stark contrast to the conditions earlier in the week with light and puffy conditions. With one session of racing held for the day three races were held back to back. The change in conditions and the fact that a drop has now come into the scoring equation, has meant that results have tightened in almost all fleets.

Now leading the Nacra F18 Infusion class is Adam Beattie on 14 points with both Mick Guinea and Mal Richardson on 15 points. Warren Guinea is also close behind in forth on 17 points.

Governor's Cup, Farrier F9AX trimaran "Banjo" takes line honours

In the 2012 Governor's Cup race, Banjo – Kevin Webb’s Farrier F9AX trimaran, co-skippered by Sarel van der Merwe, crossed the finish line at 17:35:24 on Tuesday 1 January.

Webb and van der Merwe arrived in Jamestown, St Helena to a hero’s welcome after a 10-day downwind blast from the South African port of Simon’s Town. The team aboard this superfast trimaran sailed a good, tactical race and were unstoppable.

As they stepped ashore Team Banjo were surprisingly chirpy but Webb did admit to feeling content to be back on shore. 'We are feeling relieved and happy. We tried hard, had a great sail. We made a couple of tactical errors but our revised strategy paid off.'

Nixe Proa build, two hulls become one proa

We love all multihulls over here at Trimaran Project and one project that has caught our eye in particular is the "Nixe" proa being built by Alexander in Thailand.  Alexander and his helper have now moved to the stage of joining the hulls with newly constructed crossbeams.  It's all looking very good.  The build thread is on the proafile forums here

Farrier F32SRX trimarans have first test sail in Tauranga, NZ

The new F32SRX trimarans that have been constructed in New Zealand for Australian clients have had an initial test sail in very light conditions.  These trimarans look to be fully optioned with curved lifting foils and the triple rudder setup.  Photos courtesy of "rigger" on the crew.org.nz forums.
