Route du Rhum update, Loick leads the Ultime fleet in impressive fashion

Loick is doing well out the front of the fleet, BPVII is a more wieldy boat from a solo perspective than Spindrift 2 but if Yann can get some more stable weather he might be able to exploit the power of the boat a little better. The big story for me is how well Sebastian Josse is doing on the modified MOD70 Edmond de Rothschild he is punching well above his weight to hold onto a solid third in the Ultime class.

In the Multi50's some strategic positioning by Lalou Roucayrol on Arkema has seen him take the lead. Lalou's early strategy saw him go for a more Westerly route initially and has given him sea room and kept him out of the worst seastates that the boats went inshore had to deal with. Team Actual has to drop into Cascais for repairs to their wind instruments which will allow FenetreA Cardinal to sneak away into a more solid second place.

In the Rhum Class Route du Rhum veteran Anne Casaneuve is the leading multihull second behind the powerful canting keel monohull Vento di Sardegna.

The Route du Rhum news coverage and tracker is excellent so I will just give a summary each day and wont attempt to repost all the news here best to just visit the Route du Rhum website for full updates:

Prince de Bretagne team relaunch the Maxi 80 trimaran

The Maxi 80 trimaran has been relaunched after an extensive rebuilding program that has been conducted at the teams Lorient base.  The full rebuild was required after a capsize of the trimaran while pursuing the record route "The Mauritian" the reference time having been set by Francis Joyon.  The new mast has been constructed by Lorima and their facebook page has some good photos courtesy of sealaunay showing the relaunch:

Spindrift Racing update, Making the sails for Spindrift 2 maxi trimaran featured in the latest edition of 40 metres solo

From the following article by Virginie Bouchet on the Spindrift Racing website:

http://www.spindrift-racing.com/2014/04/spindrift-racing-series-40-metres-solo-episode-12-making-the-sails/

As promised, ’40 metres solo’ returns to the story of the sails. After last Thursday’s episode on their design, today we are walking the floor of the North Sails France sail loft in Vannes with Jacques Guichard, who tells us about the making of Spindrift 2’s giant wardrobe.

Jacques Guichard, the little brother of Spindrift’s skipper, Yann, also has a passion for the sea and racing. He chose sails as his stomping ground. He works on design, production and the on-board testing but he also fine-tunes sails for races and records. He knows his trade inside out and so was an obvious choice to be in charge of the sail programme for Spindrift racing.

“This year for Spindrift 2, we wanted to design sails light enough to be carried by Yann on his own during the Route du Rhum but strong enough to hold up to the intensity of a crewed speed record like the North Atlantic,” Guichard says. “We had the opportunity to play around with the internal structure of the sail with a view to this season’s plans. We started with calculations for the solo, then we increased the power for load testing with a crew. On the New York-Lizard Point record, it’s about sailing at 100-130 degrees to the wind and so we are not at the maximum load for a sail compared to upwind angles (50-70° to the wind). Thus, a good ‘crew-solo’ compromise was easier to find.”

Team Lalou arrive in Las Palmas in the Canary Islands after jury rigging their mastless Multi50 trimaran with kite power rig designed by Yves Parlier

After a short crossing from Madeira Team Lalou's Multi50 Arkema is in Las Palmas ready to receive a new mast which is being shipped in by "Star Magic" a 25 metre maxi catamaran.

Arkema - France docked at Las Palmas in the Canary Islands

Today, April 12, 2014, 5 hours ago | Admin
Parties on March 29 from the port of Caniçal in Madeira, Lalou Roucayrol and his trimaran Arkema - Region Aquitaine arrived at Las Palmas in the Canary Islands. Equipped with wings of kite surfs, it took 4 days at sea the trimaran towed to traverse the 300 nautical miles between the two islands. This innovative solution, initiated by Yves Parlier, allows the skipper to keep his schedule: discount site - in condition and preparation of Multi50 Arkema France is launched!

Interview with Lalou Roucayrol:

Back on the ferry between Madeira and Las Palmas

"On Saturday morning, conditions were conducive to a start, with a wind of North, Northwest-facing. It took a few hours to install the global device and have implemented a small mast with a veil of cap to well to balance the boat. The boat sailed and towed by 3 wings for 3 days and a half, to an average of about 4 knots. The wind toppled then Southwest and it drifted East. So we decided to stop at (Fuerte Ventura) on Tuesday, April 2 in the evening. To arrive on the island, we found himself downwind with the waves in the right direction, and have some tips at 10 knots! On Thursday morning, is left to arrive at Las Palmas Saturday.

We are happy to be arriving, but especially in this way. Arkema-Region Aquitaine continues to have its vocation of boat Tester and the project continues in the innovation dynamic. Not to mention that this delivery was the way to bring the boat quickly and inexpensively in the Canary Islands, but it also allows Yves Parlier and Beyond the Sea to advance in their project. I would like to thank the Royal Nautic Club de Las Palmas for its quality of home and its availability. »
The beginning of the construction of Arkema - Region Aquitaine

"The day after our arrival, the grinders were already output. In addition to repairs post capsize, we are conducting a comprehensive review of all the parts and the boat, then will have all the rigging to back up. For the new version of the trimaran, we have much innovated on the boom, which will be a real prototype. Together with Arkema and the skills of the canoeing aquitaine research platform, we use a new resin for its manufacture. We ship so the boom n ° 1, which we consider to be somewhat cumbersome to do some tests of resistance for the manufacture of the boom for the Route du Rhum. »
A new ferry

"The fact is that this rig is in France, and now need to forward it to the Canary Islands. We decided to take the means of transport that I prefer: the sea. I boarded so today, the star magic (maxi 25 metre catamaran) to bring the mast, boom and sail! This is the solution the cheapest, fastest and most environmentally friendly. Romaric Neyhousser, the architect of Arkema - Region Aquitaine, will be by my side during the crossing. We expect approximately 5 days at sea, and will have time to discuss the changes. For now, is the time that it was set! »

Spindrift Racing, Yann Guichard on the decision to race solo in the Route du Rhum

From the following press release by Spindrift Racing:

An extraordinary challenge for a legendary race. For the starting gun of the 10th Route du Rhum, on November 2, 2014, Yann Guichard will be alone at the helm of the greatest racing trimaran in the world, the maxi Spindrift 2.

At first, there is desire; that of one with a passion for multihulls and who loves to go beyond. But Yann is also equally rational; a man for challenges, he mulls over decisions and is not one to take them lightly. It is an approach he shares with Dona Bertarelli in the Spindrift racing team, with his policy to constantly make performance the central objective. He is a great enthusiast, but the future competitor of the ‘Rhum 2014′ always keeps his feet on the ground.

Team Lalou update, Their plans for 2014 after the capsize and recovery of the Multi50 trimaran in the Transat Jacques Vabre

From the following press release (in French) by Team Lalou

http://www.routedurhum.com/fr/s03_actualites/s03p02_detail_actualite.php?actu=76

the rough bing translate is below:

News from Lalou Roucayrol and his trimaran Arkema - Region Aquitaine

It's been more than 10 weeks that the trimaran injured Lalou Roucayrol arrived in the port of Caniçal in Madeira, after its capsize on the Transat Jacques Vabre November 10, 2013. Still moored in the port, still injured, the trimaran waits for the end of discussions with insurers to be rehabilitated. So far, the team of Lalou Multi, the skipper and his loyal partners mobilized to achieve the objective n ° 1 of the 2014 season: be at the start of the Route du Rhum which will start from St Malo November 2 next with a competitive boat and to play the leading roles.

How are you since your return to Madeira?

I am fine. The capsize is behind me we are now in the phase of reconstruction. Following the capsize, the team and myself have made a real round of introspection and set up a new line of conduct. It is thus a new Lalou that begins this year 2014! I'm already clearly mode preparation of the Route du Rhum - Destination Guadeloupe: I'm very careful with my diet, my sleep and I do a lot of sport. Every day, I have a complete program and I alternate between the race walk, cardio exercises, bodybuilding and navigations. I navigate with everything that floats at the tip of the Verdon! It passes the catamaran, to the mini 6.50 with Quentin Vlamynck, or even sea kayaking. I'm in a positive frame of mind and I look to the future.

What is the news on the boat?

The situation of the trimaran, still moored in Caniçal, is complex. After several months of research active in an attempt to repatriate him, we are now in discussion with the insurer in an attempt to rehabilitate it on-site. However to carry equipment up to Madeira, including the new mast, is almost impossible. We are therefore studying the possibility of organizing the construction in the Canary Islands. The decision will be taken in the coming weeks. In the meantime, we have already launched the construction of different parts broken when capsized: two bar - more design positions - two new rudders, which will be better adapted to the boat, and the mast. We also ordered a new set of sails, but above all we are working actively on the new boom. In collaboration with Arkema, a new resin developed for its construction. This allows us to continue to work on the development and improvement of the boat, in relying on the skills of our partners in Aquitaine and Arkema researchers.

Your partners so loyal to your project?

Oh yes! I would like to thank each of them, particularly the Region Aquitaine and Arkema. Their behaviour following the capsize was exemplary. I have received countless messages of support, and they mobilized in order to continue this adventure together. None of them has called into question its commitment. I also attended vows organized at headquarters of Arkema and in one of the Group's subsidiaries. I have always received a warm and enthusiastic welcome. All this allows to consider the future and us out of the present constraints. All the partners realized that we needed time to rebuild the ship, because particular complexity, so we adapted the 2014 sports program to these constraints.

What is the projected schedule for 2014?

As priority we intend therefore to do the reclamation site in the Canary Islands during the month of April to have a boat ready to sail at the beginning of the month of May. I would like to make the first navigations there, before transporting the boat towards the France. Then, I shall focus me on solo drives before you participate in the trophies of the Prince and the port de Fécamp planned through the end of August. It is important for the Multi50 class and to get back in competition against my fellow mode. Finally comes the main objective of the season and the whole project: the Route du Rhum - Destination Guadeloupe.

Voiles et Voiliers interview with Lionel Lemanchois and Vincent Laurent Prevost on the new Prince de Bretagne Maxi and it's competition in the 2014 Route du Rhum

Voiles et Voiliers have published an excellent interview with Lionel Lemanchois and Laurent Prevost of VPLP. It discusses the new Prince de Bretagne Maxi 80 and the other Ultime multihull competitors for the 2014 Route du Rhum.

The original article (in French) is here for our French readers:

http://www.voilesetvoiliers.com/course-regate/rhum-2014-ultime-interviews-lauriot-prevost-lionel-lemonchois-prince-de-bretagne/

and the rough bing translation below

While Prince de Bretagne is baptized this weekend in Roscoff, Lionel Lemonchois gives his first impressions on this 80-foot trimaran made from the platform of the ORMA Sodebo60. Architect Vincent Lauriot-Prévost completes its analyses, as Bank Populaire VII (ex-Groupama 3) comes to his first outing and Thomas Coville transformed ex-Geronimo. All of these ultimate multihulls have only one major objective: the Route du Rhum 2014!

Lionel, back first on the concept of Prince de Bretagne...Two years ago, you decided to change a 60 foot ORMA, but not with the same approach as Gitana 11 in 2010.
L.L. : The choice was related primarily to the financial means available to my partner. The idea was from an ORMA trimaran redeemed not too expensive, to make a large boat capable of winning the Route du Rhum 2014. It would have probably been better from a blank sheet to design a multihull specially adapted for this race, but the budget was not at all the same!

Lionel Lemonchois et Vincent Lauriot-PrévostBefore the 80-foot Prince de Bretagne, Lionel Lemonchois and Vincent Lauriot-Prévost plan new optimizations before the Route du Rhum 2014.Photo @ Dominic Bourgeois The last Route du Rhum, there already was Groupama 3 (now Bank Populaire VII), Sodebo, Idec and Gitana 11Well, it imagined that they would be back at the start in Saint-Malo in 2014...
L.L. : IIL had to play in harmony with the financial means available to me. Groupama 3 was too expensive, a new boat also. We have found a solution that satisfies everyone, from a technical, budgetary, athletic perspective with the objective of a boat that will quickly, easily. I turned logically to the vplp which is a reference in the multihull. Then it took to choose the most appropriate for these transformations ORMA trimaran.

Vincent Lauriot-Prévost, why the ex -Sodebo ?
V.L.P. :C' was the broadest of the fleet (18.20 meters), which was an important parameter for the length-to-width ratio is coherent and efficient. Groupama 2, for example, was too fickle, less wide (17 metres) and especially too light (6 tonnes) to support additional power without going through the box reinforcements. The ex-Sodebo was heavy enough and structured to avoid having to review all the structure since the principle was to significantly increase the power. We had an appropriation of weight that allowed us to design a pretty close final weight of the original Prince de Bretagne .

Compared to Gitana 11 which was also boosted in 2010, what does it change?
V.L.P. : To change the three shells made out the arm, to change the roots of mast and wells of drift. So to find a balance by positioning the arm where it was needed, a contrario of Gitana 11, whose only floats have been changed and extended central hull. If we had imagined a new boat, we would have been on the same width. And with a distribution of volumes of fairly similar float. The ex-Sodebo was a trimaran, which lent itself perfectly to these transformations.
L.L. :With 7 knots of wind, Prince de Bretagne throws the paw! The behavior is pretty close to an ORMA trimaran with 20 feet long and more... The boat is harmonious, and if we had a boat nine, only the mast would have earned two meters in height. Originally, the ship weighed 6.9 tons, and in its current version, it made 7.3 tons!

And in terms of wing, one remains in the same values?
L.L. : It's the same rig, but we were able to increase the surface area of the Genoese and the gennakers because the length of central hull went 80 feet (24 meters): tack points were therefore able to be advanced. The surface of GV is identical, the Genoa is slightly larger and maxi gennaker won quite a lot of square meters. To be the lightest possible, we removed the mainsail hydraulics: the weight of cylinders and others turned into length of shell.

Caractéristiques de trimarans VPLP Rhum 2014The new Prince de Bretagne is very similar to Gitana 11 but with a higher although righting moment two times less important than that of Groupama 3. But the last winner of the Route du Rhum is proportionately much less canvas. The confrontation with the MOD70 promises to be thrilling in the medium... Note that the features of the new Sodebo (ex-Geronimo) are not yet announced.Document @ VPLP Is the behaviour of Prince de Bretagne satisfactory compared to Gitana 11?
L.L. : I've never sailed on Gitana 11 boosted! (Lionel Lemonchois had curtly thanked after won the Route du Rhum 2006 and cumulative records with the giant cata Gitana 13, ED) . But the feedback I had confirmed that his behaviour was very close to an ORMA, very fickle. We have gained in security, especially in longitudinal with six meters more. It does not fear when felled! Prince de Bretagne accelerates and pitch not up as much as Gitana 11.
V.L.P. : On Gitana 11, we left on forms of very powerful floats which sank very little - this also contributed to make fickle, especially because he tends to be soft. On Prince de Bretagne, forms are similar to those of a MOD70 and the boat is slightly burning, allowing positively transform a laughing stock under acceleration without having to push the bar.
L.L. :The balance is excellent because with the new drift to trimmer, the boat is either neutral or slightly burning. In the almost singlehanded under driver, a boat that has a tendency to climb into the wind is healthier and downwind, a boat that restarts itself, it is more efficient!

Since the water in October 2012, how many outputs at sea?
L.L. : We started to navigate in January and is cumulated more than 20 days at sea. Lack us still exits in heavy weather, but on rise in power. For the moment, the boat corresponds perfectly to what I imagined: very healthy, very pleasant, quick and easy to carry. There are still a few small improvements possible, like the change of the central rudder, currently on the transom and we could develop further, suspended under the hull. There are some files that I preferred set up after sailing: the Route du Rhum is in over a year!

Banque Populaire VII : première sortieApril 18, 2013: first exit for Bank Populaire VII (ex-Groupama 3) and Armel le Cléac 'h. The boat has already aligned off the coast of Belle-île, more than 35 knots in around twenty knots of wind...Photo @ Yvan Zedda Sea & Co

The fact of having achieved Prince de Bretagne has apparently created vocations for the next Route du Rhum, precisely. Theoretically, who will win?
V.L.P. : Banque Populaire VII (ex -Groupama 3) has so far not changed. Armel Le Cléac ' h is in the getting started phase and the boat had already well adapted to the solitaire for Franck Cammas. It measures 100 feet (30,50 m) with a four-metre mast above: it has a power of 160 m.t. while Prince de Bretagne is approximately 70 m.t.. But these boats there single-handed sail not 100% of their potential. Bank Pop VII has more reserve, but one can imagine that it will be often led to 70%, while Prince de Bretagne will instead to 85%. Armel is not going to be able to afford to change sail too often and gybes are difficult and long. But his boat has more inertia in the seas and more security reserve in grain... Theoretically, Lionel will be more comfortable to fit a diverse weather. In fact, the two boats are likely not to follow the same path on the Route du Rhum! Bank Populaire VII should favour a route with the least possible manoeuvres, much like in 2010. with Franck Cammas - but, for the next edition, which can predict that there will not be three depressions to negotiate out of the channel? It is therefore impossible to know how much it must degrade the speed of one and the other vessel polar and which will be the first in Pointe-à-Pitre...
L.L. : On Bank Populaire VII, it will be hard to be in the good 'range' of sailing at all times. If the weather is fickle, I would have easier to adapt. We know that the first coming out of the train of depressions to touch the trade winds escapes... Remains to be seen if this will unfold as in 2010 or as in 2006! I believe that the key is to feel good about his boat, with confidence, not to be exceeded. The Route du Rhum is a lonely race! I do not at all feel frustrated not navigate on the ex -Groupama 3.

And from the two planes Nigel Irens/Benoît Cabaret, Sodebo and Idec ?
L.L. : I'm less worried... It will also depend on the weather, but the Route du Rhum, is not that of about in the breeze.
V.L.P. : I think that Prince de Bretagne is faster, not all the time, especially to the close, but on the whole route, Yes.

Comparatif Prince de Bretagne, Gitana 11, Groupama 3The new Prince de Bretagne (left) is positioned as an intermediate trimaran Gitana 11 (in the centre) and the ex-Groupama 3 (right). Without claiming to be the same potential in the breeze as the previous winner of the Route du Rhum 2010, Lionel Lemonchois mult will be more reactive than the ex-Groupama and easier to handle than Gitana...Document @ VPLP

And ex-Geronimo as Thomas Coville is transforming, it will be nearest Bank Populaire VII or Prince de Bretagne ?
V.L.P. : Clearly, the target from a big heavy boat (105 feet and 20 tons), was closer to the Groupama 3 (17 tonnes) concept. The new Sodebo should get closer the weight of Bank Populaire VII... And there is little difference in width between these two ships: 20 meters for the ex -Geronimo 21.20 metres for the ex -Groupama 3.

By changing the central hull and mast, but also the floats? Or by cutting the lower hull to have shapes similar to the ex -Groupama 3 ?
V.L.P. : A new central hull allows, as on Prince de Bretagne, change mat and wells of derivative roots, and choose suitable sail plan. In the end, the characteristics of the new Sodebo and Bank Populaire VII will be very close, with a power, a wing and a similar weight - they will have the same strengths and weak points that Prince de Bretagne... As to changes outside the central hull and rigging, it will depend on the budget of Thomas and his program over several years. The first deadline, is to be ready in Saint-Malo, which short still to transform all of a sudden.
L.L. : This comes very quickly, I know something! For our part, after the baptism in Roscoff Saturday, we go down to Trinidad for the Tour de Belle-Ile (4 May) and we put with great price Lesley in Douarnenez (5-6 May). This will be an opportunity to compete with Bank Populaire VII ! Then we go down to Valencia for the Route of the Princes (9-30 June). We are five for the tour of Europe with Mathieu Souben, Fred Le Peutrec, Jean-Luc Nélias and Alex Pela. We will be the only ultimate multihull but we will have the reference of the MOD70: in the little time at the close with their large gennaker, they are very fast!

And what about the 50-foot Prince de Bretagne?
L.L. : Gilles Lamiré is currently redeem him: it should take possession next week with its own partners (the Saint-Malo agglomération) to align with the Princes road.

Route du Rhum 2014 update, G class multihull field begins to take shape

From the following le Figaro article

http://nautisme.lefigaro.fr/courses-nautiques/a-la-une-0/2013-03-09-16-27-39/multicoques---la-guerre-des-geants-est-relancee-9479.php

At the: multihulls: the war of the Giants is restarted

and the rough google translation of the article

Franck Cammas was the first to embark on a giant trimaran in the Route du Rhum 2010. His Groupama 3, Jules Verne Trophy winner, was reconfigured for single-handed sailing with a mast lower. Successful bet since he won the race hands down. For the next Route du Rhum, no less than four giant trimarans should cut the starting line. Geronimo, 34 meters, is the former trimaran Olivier de Kersauson. He left the port of Brest on March 1st to enter Multiplast yard in Vannes. Program: Installation of foils, a new rudder under the central hull and a new mast. "This boat was ahead of its time and can still make beautiful performance," says Hervé Devaux, which calculates the structures of these giants of the sea. Against Geronimo, the former Groupama 3, which should be renamed Banque Populaire VI, has earned for the victory of his high 31.50 meters. "The difference, took Hervé Devaux is Armel Le Cléac'h has little experience in multihull while Thomas Coville has proven itself."

Crédits photo : Yvan Zedda, Groupama3

In old veteran of solo sailing on giant trimaran, we will also have to reckon with Francis Joyon who just improved the record the Discovery Route, between Spain and the Bahamas, 8 days, 16 hours and 7 minutes. He beat his own record as more than a day! With his boat 29.70 meters Idec, he finished behind Cammas in the previous Route du Rhum. "Even though his boat, built in 2006, began to be old, this is the one that has the most chance of winning," said Hervé Devaux. In turn, Lemonchois just put its new water boat Prince de Bretagne. He is a former ORMA trimaran of 18 meters which was extended to 24 meters. Already twice winner of the Route du Rhum, the skipper Norman believes in his chances for the 2014 edition.

Multi 50 trimaran "Maitre Jacques" in the shed for new paint and preperation for Route du Rhum 2014

Second week of paint preperation for the trimaran Maitre Jacques. Julien Deniel, the painter of the team worked for 15 days on the hull. Markings have been removed to allow for meticulous sanding of the floats.
Painting of the hull, which is original from the 2005 launching of the boat will then be completely redone and in February, the trimaran will be repainted with the new corporate colors of sponsor Maitre Jacques.
Julien joined the team Maitre Jacques in November and will take over a large part of the technical preparation of the trimaran to the Route du Rhum 2014. Invaluable for Loïc.
